how do you change the surface of something on the opposite side?

Nooby question right here: I'm trying to create a strip of some basic sticky tape from just a primitive plane. I want one side to be black and the other white (the sticky side white) but when I apply a shader to the black side it colors the whole thing both sides that colour.
Is it possible to colour the otherside of the plane white?

Only by either having 2 physical sides of the object, or by using a special shader that distinguish between the front and the back, such as https://www.daz3d.com/oso-janus-double-sided-shader-merchant-resource-for-iray
I would think you could add a geoshell to your strip with a small offset and color that a different color than the strip.
A primitive plane is only one surface, it doesn't have "sides". To do this with a plane you would need a double-sided shader, like this one: https://www.daz3d.com/oso-janus-double-sided-shader-merchant-resource-for-iray
Another option could be to use a very thin box instead of a plane.
Oso 3D has a product for doing that.

Edit:
Ha, just noticed Leana's reply.
or make a very flat cube and assign different surfaces for the top and the below
