For you BSG fans...

Looks like Comet chanels is starting up Battlestar Galactica (2004).  Much better than the original which was great too but got kind of hokey.  Now if some intreped artists will use it an an inspiration to make some nice BSG freebes and maybe some items for sale that are "close enough" but not crossing the line to get a cease and desist letter, I will be spending some money.

  • Except for the gaping hole of mediocrity that was season 3.5 when the writers tried to run The Bionic Woman at the same time, yes it was really, really good. One of the few box set DVDs I actually own.

Do you mean the most recent re-imagined or rebooted thingie?

I mean, a Google search turns up a ton of content and lots of it is free.

Doesn't look like you need to spend any money.

I found a Cylon ship from ShareCG.  There might be other BSG stuff there.

Yeah, there's lots of free stuff but if you try to sell prints of your artwork, watch out for NBC Universal...

I remember the first 2 seasons being very good... I wonder how it has aged, it's been 15ish years.

The back half of season 3 and all of seaon 4... was pretty lousy, the way I remember it.

Agreed. I am a HUGE fane of the original series when I was a kid, so I was thilled when a remake came out, but it took a few episodes for me to get into it since it had a different feel/vibe and after the firs 2 sasons, i stopped watching.

As for models, there are a ton of ships out there, many free. Check the sketchup warehouse for nearly every ship from the series.

Yes but most of it is not DAZ format and I (blank) at converting Poser content to Daz Studio.

The problem is, the Daz PA would hear these two reponses:

    1) Why would I BUY this when there are FREE models all over the net?

    2) I do fan art. Why would I buy a knock off when the real accurate stuff is available here, here and here.

    ----------

You don't have to blank. Try drag and drop and from there, you'll mostly be grabbing the textures and putting them in the proper surfaces slot.

If it imports invisible, turn up the opacity slider in surfaces.

If you're having trouble moving stuff around, create a null and parent your object to it and move the null around instead.

I usually open 1 Daz figure to check the scale (especially for cars) and once you put the Main Texture is the base/diffuse channel, you're 80% there.

Do it once and you'll be comfortable with how it works.

Better that you spend 15 minutes learning this (A forever skill you get to keep) than have a vendor spend months making alternate-styled BSG models and having almost zero sales and seeing those two same responses over and over.

The thing I really like about the reboot is that they put Isaac Newton back in the drivers seat, and made it look cool to boot.

An earlier series that did this was Babylon 5.  The design of the Starfury even got NASA's attention, with it's placement of main and maneuvering thrusters and such.

But yeah, watching a Viper flip end over end to point the nose at a pursuer is just hella cool!

Comet has also added Sliders to it's lineup, and Babylon 5 is still on for a while longer, albiet late at night.  And Stargate SG1 is also still in the lineup.  Quantum Leap and The Outer Limits round things out, but those two shows probably aren't as popular r.e. models related to the show.  Sliders had the Cro-Mags, so I'd imagine someone out there might want those guys... even though that show pretty much lost it's way thanks to network interference.

I do have the BSG rebooot on DVD, but I like to have the TV on in the background for background noise, so Comet is an interesting place to park things fairly often.

If you don't mind me asking, why did you change your username? I've noticed a number of new usernames that look like mac addresses, so just curious. smiley

I loved when they had the Jimi Hendrix music and wondered WHAT was going on in that writer's room lol! There was definitely some psychedelic influence in those episodes!

...hmm Hendrix in space, need to see that.  I've never watched the series when it was on as my television died a couple years before the reboot.  Didn't have anything to play the DVDs on when they were released.

Yes, I loved how they accentuated how much skill it took to pilot a Colonial Viper well: Starbuck was an absolute badass; arrogant as anything, but she could always cash the checks she wrote with her mouth.

This is very much the problem designers are facing. NBC is very quick on the trigger to take down BSG inspired products being sold. They mostly ignore fanart nowadays (it used to be as bad as the CBS crackdown on Trekkie fansites), but the moment money is involved, their lawyers will swamp those involved with a huge amount of paperwork. So, they ignore the free BSG inspired models. But use those in some commercial game, or sell renders featuring those models, and you'll be in trouble.

I could only wish for big companies to take a more supportive approach towards the fans of their products. Just imagine CBS and NBC having their own store here, selling accurate models from their series. Or big game developers like EA and CD-ProjectRed distributing old used assets from their games (since they'll probably use improved assets for their next release of the series anyway, meaning they're always a step ahead of their fanbase in quality).

  • I absolutely despised the newer BSG and felt that it strayed too far from the original series. I think some of the remakes of older shows from the 70's, 80's, etc., have the issue where stuff that was once considered taboo for TV/movies is being thrown in so much that you end up with something completely unlike the original.

I mostly enjoyed it for what it was (but agree that it went downhill a bit after the 2nd season). I do wish that they'd called it something else though. Other than running in a fleet of ships from an artificial life-form, it had little to do with the original and the complete changes to some of the characters made them original characters anyway (so why name them the same?). The exploration of AI developing emotion and religion and coming back to haunt its creator is an interesting concept - but one that should have been its own thing. I think I would have enjoyed it more had I been able to separate it from the original. YMMV and all that.

Aesthetically, I think it did a great job - the BSG ship itself, the vipers and the cylon craft were all very well realised.

Old BSG was fun. It was a Glen Larson show from the late 70's. It mostly exceeded expectations. Great music and it had some weirdness. John Colicos chewed the scenery and stole scenes. Better than Buck Rogers, anyway. The 1980 redux was awful, but nothing to do for that.

I enjoyed new BSG when I binge-watched it, but I think Baltar's odd behavior would have been noticed right away. Except for plot armor, he would have been kept in the brig or tossed out an airlock. The series became more interesting as it went on. I like the exploration of Cylon psyche and the way the Galactica and her crew evolved over time. Blood and Chrome was pretty cool! That was a one-shot, was supposed to be pilot for a series. It stands well on its own. If you missed it, it's worth the watch. I missed Caprica, but nothing I heard about it was very promising.

There have always been a ton of Battlestar Galactica freebies on the Internet, for decades.

Here's a model I converted to Carrara 3D and DAZ Studio.
