question on daz decimator
in The Commons
Hi, can someone say, does decimator help to get viewport / render speed faster? Does it reduce vram consumption?
Or is it mainly for use in other engines.
Thanks

I've not tested it extensively, but from what I saw, it will reduce VRAM consumption in Iray.
However, other than fitting the scene into VRAM and keeping things on the GPU, the impact on render speed will probably be relatively small.
Don't forget that the base humans have SubD applied, so you can lghten the load simply by reducing the sub-division levels in the Parameetrs pane. Also, for most renders, the maps will take far more memory than the geometry.
decimator is a great tool. to have , It is used for reducing the mesh polygon count which does help speed up I ray rendering some. But not as much as you would expect it actually works for 3delight much better. . decimator is used to reduce poly count to geometry mesh to speed up gaming , its great for animation where you want to add more than one person to the scene etc. But you will need to further decrease gpu load. to increase your render times & reduces the amount of gpu resources being used. . As Richard stated reduce your texture maps will help with lighten the load on the vram. and the biggest usage of your GPU resources Out of all the maps used are the "Normal" maps which are usually twice the size of the base & bump maps . when i need to speed things up and don't want to mess with everything under the surface tabs I'll start with removing normal maps first . Normal maps are used to give refined details for close ups. like deep poors in the skin etc. so if your doing large scenes with out any close up POV of the characters I would start by removing the normal maps first . decimator is used for reducing poly count of the mesh and its useful but it does not work for iray as well as removing or reducing texture maps
