Is 6gb of RAM enough for renders through DAZ?

  • cjrosdat4: People have made great renders on machines much less capable than yours.  My suggestions before spending $2,000+ on a new computer:

    1.  Learn to minimize the demand for RAM and CPU use.  There are many guides to read, and several useful Youtube videos on the topic.  Lots of us have wasted enormous amounts of time by simply failing to adjust render settings properly.  Learning to adjust render settings will improve both finished render quality and render speed.

    2. It will be easy to overload your current computer, so don't think you can put a platoon of Genesis 3 figures fully dressed and equipped into an environment with a thousand items.  Recognize limits and be ruthless about what you really need in the frame.  Is that house plant or beverage bottle in the background really visually important?  Think about what can be seen in the render and cull any unnecessary items.  Even on a 32 GB machine with ridiculously good processing power, why render distractions?  Lots of great renders are made with 2D backdrops or a figure contrasted against a colored background.

    3.  Don't think every render needs to be widescreen at the highest resolution.  Widescreen renders are often 60-75% visual dead space; the objects of interest only occupy 25-40% of the frame.  Put some thought into aspect ratio.  Save high-resolution rendering for when you think you have a keeper.

    They have to be reporting the nonshared RAM. This is my field there has never been a 1Gb, 2Gb, 3GB or 6Gb stick of DDR4. The spec is very specific.

    Incorrect, they are not common, but they do exist. According to this spec sheet, https://www.cnet.com/products/hp-17-bs051od-17-3-core-i3-7100-6-gb-ram-1-tb-hdd-us/  It clearly says one 2GB + one 4GB in the memory specifications.     The problem here is that when you work around so many limitations, you really start to sacrifice your vision. Its like anything else, sure you can make a movie on anything that can record moving images. But people playing with sticks in their back yard is not going to be a Lord of the Rings style epic no matter how much you do. This laptop has very little memory, which is one limitation, followed up by a dual core laptop i3, which is another. The i3 is the biggest issue here, because it will take forever to render anything. Have people used them? Yes, extremely patient people, who could allow their computer to sit rendering for the many, many, many hours it would take to render an image. Some people might need to use their computer for other things at times. Like if this computer was intended for school work...that would be a serious issue.

    You certainly don't need to drop $2000 on machine. We have had people install recent GPUs in decade old hardware. Not too long ago we had several different people install what were then fairly new 1070s into desktops sporting Core 2 Quads, these 4 core processors are totally ancient, even older than the ops. They are so old that the ops i3 might be faster at some things. But without any other upgrades to their system, they could render at the same speed as anybody else who had a 1070. I am not exaggerating, they posted in the sickleyield benchmark thread their results. Iray is ALL about the GPU, period. Some RAM would still help, obviously, but one does not need to focus on too much with Iray other than the GPU. You can literally grab a piece of junk off the street and pop a 2060 Super in and feel like a rockstar. No $2000 needed. If someone is not afraid of buying used, they can build extremely cheap and still have a pretty solid rendering machine. Most builders would laugh at the machine I described, but most builders don't work with Iray. You don't need a balanced machine for Iray. It is a nice plus, but not absolutely necessary. Even my machine is a bit of an oddball. I have two 1080tis, which are decently high end GPUs, but I only have a i5 CPU that dates back to 2014. But the i5 is not an issue for rendering since I am not rendering on CPU.

    By any standards the specs are very low. There is simply not a lot of RAM. Maybe some very simple scenes on a 640x480 resolution, with everything dailed down, but thats the limit. Personally I would start looking for a better / more suitable computer if you have the budget. 
     

    For Iray you want be looking for a computer with a 6Gb Nvidia Videocard minimum, and at least a more recent generation i5 or AMD equivalent. RAM should be 8gb at least, but 16gb would help a lot.

    ..yeah on that 32 bit 1.6 GHz duo core notebook I mentioned, even rendering in the "plain vanilla" version of  3DL took an average of 45 min for a moderate scene to upwards of two hours for a busier one (provided it didn't crash).  That was in ver 2.0 before UberEnvironment. Daz has become much more robust since then.

    I didn't find the exact specs direct from HP because I don't have the exact model number but I did find this from a reviewer on the class of machine.  I've highlighted the part that applies to the 17 inch model.

    So, according to these specs, the computer pictured can be improved quite a bit by memory and hard drive updates as well, it appears, with graphic capability?

    I didn't find the exact specs direct from HP because I don't have the exact model number or better yet, the serial number.  But I did find this from a reviewer (TechRadar: https://www.techradar.com/reviews/hp-pavilion-17 ) on the class of machine.  I've highlighted the part that applies to that 17 inch model.

    So, according to these specs, that computer can be improved quite a bit by CPU, memory and hard drive updates as well, it appears, with better graphic capability?

    NOTE:  I'm not absolutely sure I have the correct machine (probably not because of the AMD CPU instead of an i3).  So, take the attached description with a grain of salt.  

    (so many models & variations of models, the serial number would remove the confusion)

    Micron was violating the spec. The DDR4 spec is clear. I'm guessing that's why they aren't available any more. Although it wouldn't surprise me to see HP using things like that. They're well known for that kind of stuff. 

    If anyone has such a system get a second 4Gb stick and replace the 2Gb one, check that you can first HP might have soldered the sticks in. DDR4 is meant to work with matched sets of RAM. The memory controller on the CPU will have real trouble with asymetric memory channel capacities (which is why they changed the spec back in DDR2 IIRC to only support the same capacity across all channels). I would not be shocked to see a noticeable performance boost.

    laptops that don't use desktop parts, this thing doesn't, can't have the CPU swapped, well not easily you could desolder it and then solder in a new CPU but you won't be able to easily get a new chip and you'll need someone who has a solder station and a lot of experience with floating SMY's to get it done.
