Can anyone think of a way to give DAZ Studio exclusive video card access?

This means that somehow, at the windows level, you only give DAZ Studio permission to use the video card, while all other applications are denied access to the video card; this means things like a video player, outside or inside browser, or anything that might try to use the video card is denied access temporarily.

This would require some kind of app that controls permissions at the windows level.

I've concluded that the reason DAZ sometiems goes into CPU mode for unexplaine reasons is because something else is trying to access the video card and that causes some kind of permission issue. It's like DAZ detects that something else needs the video card, so it gives up control and reverts to CPU mode.

Often times you might be watching a tutorial in a browser while working with DAZ, and any type of video player is going to use the video card and taht could conflict with DAZ's control over the video card. If you close any app that might need the video card, DAZ will sometimes regain GPU access/control.

well you need another card to drive the monitor and don't plug anything into the card you want to use for DS

then in Nvidia control panel set only DAZ studio to use the card

    This is not entirely accurate.

The problem is not control over the video card. The problem is the Ram of the video card. Whatever else you use will consume some of the VRAM.

Unless you have a second video card as Wendy mentioned you will not be able to do anything with Windows. So giving Daz control of the card would do nothing if you still need it to do stuff.

So, if you don't have a second video card I suggest you get one of the many apps/programs that monitors VRAM consumption. This is how I manage. I always monitor how much is used.

If the render starts in GPU you can see how much of the VRAM is being used. If it is close to the limit, you can try to turn off some other things.

It is possible to have a drop to CPU which doesn't appear to be related to running out of memory - I've mainly had it when doing several updates in quick succession using Iry preview mode (e.g. applying a materials preset, realising I waned the oen next door, and immediately applying that). If I wait until the status bar indicates that the preview is done updating data (though it will still be rendering) before doing anything else that will force a refresh it doesn't seem likely to happen.
