Textures not working properly?

When I apply a texture to a plain, the texture comes out blurry and distorted. Why is this happening and how can I fix it?

Which view/render mode is this happening in, and what size is the plane? For large planes, you will probably have to increase the texture's tiling.
It's under texture shaded. The plane is 400cm.
Are you applying a shader preset? You will probably need to increase the vertical and horizontal tiling. If it is a material preset, the bitmap might be a too low a resolution for the size of the plane. That can be tiled also, but it might not be seamless, whereas most shader presets are.
No, I'm not applying a shader preset.
What is the texture? Is it a fabric design? Is it bricks? Is it a character skin? Not everything is meant to look correct on a large square plane.

How about a picture, if you can? Material presets are usually made for a specific named object or hierarchy, like a plane called Ground, or SouthWall, or something like that. Or are you loading a bitmap directly into a shader channel, like diffuse color (3DL - DAZ Studio Default) or base color (Iray Uber). Previews can sometimes be misleading, so what does a proper render give you? Spot renders are good, too. If using Iray, an Iray preview will also show what it really looks like.
The texture is just a bunch of lines. I attached an image showing what it's doing wrong. It's supposed to be nine black lines and one red line evenly. Nine black lines, one red line, nice black lines, one red line, and so on and so forth.
Could be due to (edit: lack of) anti-aliasing if a line falls on a pixel boundary, or low resolution. If you make the render at least as many pixels as the bitmap (preferably more that 2x), that might fix it. Try rotating the plane just a few degrees to see if the missing lines show up. If you want to render smaller, you might have to increase the line width, or adjust the pixel filtering in Render settings.
In Edit>Preferences (Daz Studio>Prefrences for Mac) the Interface tab has a slider labelled texture resources - where is it set?
