Help me find long, bone based, female hair, mats that rival Raiya, and can look perfect in any pose.

I'm looking for long hair that goes to mid back with the following criteria:

- Highly bone based, resulting in high posability. Meaning the hair can be posed in such a way that it can look nearly perfect no matter what the pose.
- Has two major parts: The back part is always behind the shoulders, while the front can be both behind or in front of the shoulders.
- When the front or back hair is rotated in any direction, the deformations are smooth and perfect. Sometimes when you rotate parts of hair, the hair seems to curve in bizarre ways, that's no good.
- The back and front part of the hair have multiple bones from the bottom to the top, so you can begin bending the front or back part of the hair from any height. Kind of like how a ponytail is split up into multiple bones. A ponytail lets you begin bending it from multiple parts, sometimes up to 20 bones: bottombraid1, bottombraid2, bottombraid3, midbraid1, midbraid2, midbraid3, topbraid1, topbraid2, topbraid3. I'm looking for long hair that has this similar setup.

Please help me find this perfect long hair, thanks.

As you learn how to make and rig hair, I look forward to seeing the results.

Don't know of any hairs like that from the top of the head, but mesh grabber has been very helpful in tweaking hairs if it fell wrong. Same for the new strandbased hairs, gravity does the work for you, most of the time.

  • did you see the new dforce soft curls hair that just came out? Chevybabe's hair always has morphs so you can use with or without simulating a drape, and they're absolutely gorgeous too. ;)

Looks cool, but I need flat hair not curly.  But if I do need curly hair one day, I'll strongly consider dforce soft curls hair.

I'm considering this product right now: https://www.daz3d.com/super-sleeky-hair-for-genesis-3-female-s-and-genesis-3-male-s-and-oot-hairblending-2-0 - It's long, flat and it looks like it could bend pretty well, but I'm not sure how it would look if the head is rotated all the way back. It probably wouldn't hang forward well if G8F was on her hands and knees, and while on her hands and knees, the back of her hair would probably be messed up, and I'd have to spend tons of time fixing it in Zbrush.

Looks like a lovely hair and on G3F it might not require 'tons' of time for making morphs.

I will point out though that G3F is in the "T" pose and G8F is in the "A" - this translates to while the "which figure is this for" autofit request will pop up and one can thusly convert the hair to G8F, if using the default autofit clones it might not be quite what one is expecting. If one uses the autofit clone [link in my signature] I made, it may or not - didn't test them with long hair pieces. After converting the hair, IF it looks like it should, save it for G8F under a new name so this conversion process only need be done once.

    n.b. it's also available in a bundle.

Super Sleeky is very nice long hair, but I haven't had much luck with it after it's been autofit to G8. Whenever I've done that, the posing dials stop working. I usually just load it separately from the figure, parent it to the head of my G8F, and adjust it manually to make it look like it fits nicely. It's not hard, but a bit of extra steps.

Just a quick thought, though: I know you're looking for hair with lots of posing bones, but for what you're describing, I think you'd be more likely to get what you want using the strand-based hair tools that are built into Daz Studio. You can make your own hair and make it as long or short as you want and though it won't have rigging to work with, it can be combed manually to perfectly fit any pose. This is a good place to start learning, if you haven't checked it out already: Strand-Based Hair Mini Tutorial. :)

Keep in mind, Super Sleeky (and many other hairs) work just fine on G8 figures (retain their morphs, etc.) as long as you load the hair without a figure selected and then edit the hair's Scene identification to Genesis 8 Male (or Female) before fitting it to the character. Here it is on Genesis 8 Male (quick render...excuse the pixelation) with the morphs fully functional:

I have to say you cannot always create SBH hair and brush the guides to fit your pose due to restrictions of the SBH editor. The SBH recognizes collision with the base mesh which is generally a good thing but if you wish to adjust your hair to fit another pose your base mesh might be in your way.

Second and most important probably for SBH: like every hair, how good your hair looks in the final render depends largely on how good your output geometry is. Stand based hair and mesh hair are not different. If you want fairly realistic SBH you have to model each or most strands individually which can be quite painful, considering the lack of selection tools, the lack of a proper view viewport and the lack of control over the clump function. So naturally once you've done sculpting the hair via the guides you cannot simply brush the guides to another direction or you will destroy the structure of your hair partially due to the complexity of your hair model.

Depends on the hair model of course ... some hair models will be fine if you brush them to adjust for the pose, for some, you might lose details or structure of your previous sculpt. Wavy hair might suffer more for this than straight hair.
