Hi -

Does it make a difference if I let my scene render Iray in the preview pane before hitting the Iray button?

Thanks - Keith

    Not really.

It can. The VRAM doesn't seem to flush fully after each Iray render (only on completely restarting DS), so it's possible that previously having rendered in the viewport may end up forcing the scene to render on CPU rather than GPU.

In any case, it's not advisable to do both at the same time (probably not what you were suggesting, but just being sure).

Another difference between both is the preview screen uses Iray Interactive, which is a scaled down version (less features = more speed)

You can also put the render engine on Interactive if you want more speed but less features.

The opposite is often the case though - doing a small and quick render (a few seconds is enough) in a separate window and keeping it open in the background will often (depending on the scene, I believe it works best with smaller scenes) make the preview respond faster to scene changes.  Subsequent renders in a separate window will usually also start rendering faster.
