For the most part I keep the render settings on default, other than changing the max time to 0 so it will keep going. Most often, I render overnight and manually cut it when I wake up, if I think it's finished enough. I use a texture compression of 2048/4096 for regular scenes and 4096/8192 for closups. My "go-to" render size is 5000px on the smallest side. Most of my scenes include one or two figures at SubD 4 along with lots of dForce and decals/geoshells. Chromatic SSS on skin takes longer to render than mono SSS. Volumetric lighting is also pretty intensive.
The longest scene I've ever rendered on the GPU was 25hrs and it was three G8 figures at SubD 4, three dForce sweaters, one dForce hair (cloth system), and a hell of a lot of goeshells.
