using dForce content without having dForce

When are dForce items useable as non-dForce items?

I'm running DS 4.8 and can't make use of dForce.  Topics in the forum seemed to suggest that dForce items wouldn't work at all, however I just tried two random items and in a quick test they seem to work just fine as if they were non-dForce clothing.  I do see that one item that had dForce fur simply has no fur.   So, are there general rules for what is/isn't expected to work in my scenario, so I know what to avoid and what I can still purchase?

Thanks in advance for any info!

Most dforce clothing items are rigged, so they usually work, but won't look as nice as they would if draped. Hair is a hit or miss, since most of the early, none strand based dforce hair needs to use dforce.

Curious, how the heck can you purchase much in the store and expect it to work when running 4.8? Why not upgrade?

In 4.8 G8 will not fully work. 4.9 is required.

Some dForce items will look ok if not simulated in a standing or walking pose. Any major deviation from the zero pose needs simulation.

This is also true for many non-dForce items, particularly long dresses. They often look terrible in anything other than standing poses.

Last I tried, versions above 4.8 would not import my content library, huge chunks were missing.  I forget details as it was a few years back but something was said suggesting that was truly the end of the line for DS for me and I should not expect it to be a temporary bug that would be fixed in a subsequent version.  I tried a few times then accepted my unfortunately seeming fate.  As it took decades to categorize everything, starting over (which technically possible) is not practical,I don't see any gain worth a lifetime of lost effort for myself.  Given that I buy mostly pre-iray content, I've had no shortage of goodies to buy though, I just have to watch out for a few gotchas when shopping like a G8 error message but G8 still works, ect.

I have 4.7 on my Win7 machine with the latest 4.12 beta so that is an option

as to why, I use a third party script that will not work in later builds sometimes

Do you just mean that like any other static item they would not make sense in certain poses because they are aren't draping correctly?  Or do you mean that there is something specific to dforce items that will prevent them from acting like a static item under certain pose conditions?

I still don't trust it completely, but what I've discovered so far about the DS4.9+ CMS issues:

    1) The database migration that occurs the first time you launch DS4.9+ misses a lot of stuff, but reimporting user data (which I exported from 4.8) appears to get everything.

    2) Never log into Connect if you have items installed with DIM.

That said, I still primarily use DS4.8.  I have the general release 4.8.0.59, and only install later versions to the the Public Build channel.
