installing content

Surfing the forum can be confusing at times. I am fairly inexpereinced at DAZ.

Many posts say don't install using the "Install Manager" because it doesn't always work. That comment is confusing because none of the posts that I have seen state why.

What is the recommended way to install content?

Thank you

Pretty sure DIM is the most used way to install content.

in my experience, you need to go to your DAZ 3D install folder and learn the file paths to your content so you know how to troubleshoot and know what content you have installed. For years I installed everything manually and really had no problems, but with a new PC earlier this year and a TON on content, I decided to start fresh and use DIM (install manager) for the first time. Other than some plugins that need to be installed manually, DIM has had no issues installing content from the DAZ store. I do have a separate content directory that I use for other stores and install everything manually in there. Like I said, it works well as long as you understand the file paths and know where to install things.

Another key part to this is NOT using smart content, use the content library instead, It will show you all you have installed and WHERE IT IS!

When you d/l content from your account it comes in a ZIP (or RAR depending on what you use) file, open it and you can click into the folders to see the file structure. match this up with what you have already installed and it's pretty straightforward.

I have been using Daz Installation Manager pretty much since it was introduced, and the only problems I have ever had were a couple of products which had been incorretly packaged (a support ticket sorted that out).

Actually I have read about more problems reported by people using Connect (some older products and certain plugins for example apparently don't work properly through Connect) than DIM, although a small minority have had DIM problems which they have not been able to get to the bottom of. These may be the people whose posts you have seen.

DIM, and Connect (installing within Daz Studio) work well as long as the paths are set correctly (which they are by default) - some people wish to take absolute control of the process, which is their privilege as long as they are prepared to troubleshoot, but should their advice not to use the supplied content isntallation tools should not be taken too seriously.
