how do I 'unselect' the surfaces?

(see pic pls) seems somehow I can't just select things normally its only the surfaces that select so how can I change it back pls as I don't know what I did here.

Click on the Arrow icon to get the "Node Selector" tool back. You currently have the "Surface Selector" tool activated.
