how to stop DIM from installing over existing content.

Ages ago I bought Celeste for Teen Raven 8.

Today I bought Celeste by Marcius

After installing Marcius's Celeste, my character load icon for Celeste for Teen Raven was gone, overwritten by Marcius's Celeste.

This happened before with two characters named Juniper.

Short of policing each step and manually installing, how do I keep this from happening?

Or, why doesn't Daz keep artists from using the same character names as other artists' characters?

It is unfortunate that there are a limited number of names that might appeal to an artist, but they can make efforts to distinguish one product from another similarly named. Usually adding a PA name or acronym is enough to be unique, either in the filename or the path used. The best way to get it corrected is with a help ticket, explaining the conflict, but that could take a while to resolve.

Are you using DIM to install*? You could move one of them before installing the next, but that will break metadata and smart content functionality. Or, while you wait, you could edit the product archive to change filenames and/or paths, with accompanying changes to the manifest and metadata support files to reflect the changes. Make sure the affected products are uninstalled first, then copy the modified archives into the download folder and refresh DIM. They should show up as Ready to Install, so just install normally and everything should work properly. You would hopefully eventually see an updated version in DIM.

  • You need to report this to Technical Support - Daz/QA can't police every product for clashes like this, it's one reason they (at least) encourage PAs at Daz to give the folders and properties names that include a PA-sepcific identifier (like all the FW* characters from Fred Wnkler - though of course FW can also be Forbidden Whispers)

Thus pointing out another angle on the situation; this is an excerpt from The Jargon File

In 1989, a random of the journalistic persuasion asked hacker Paul Boutin “What do you think will be the biggest problem in computing in the 90s?” Paul's straight-faced response: “There are only 17,000 three-letter acronyms.”
