What IS this?!

4.12 is a bit crashy on me. But not so much that it's unusable. However, over the last week I've started getting this bit of weirdness when opening or merging a saved scene. In the first place, it takes way too long, but that's an old issue, and I just live with it. However, in the past few days, the scene comes in with all of these 'Reality_Scene_Data' entries in the scene tab. I just delete them and carry on. But what ARE they? There can be hundreds of them. I don't even use Reality, and it isn't installed on this computer. What is generating these?

Do you have the reality plugin? If not I have no idea.
Those are left-overs from a Scene saved with (an older version of, I think) the Reality plug-in. You can use File>Save As>Scene Subset to save without them.
But I've never *used* the Reality plugin. Yeah, I bought it back in the day -- which was in 2010, acto my purchace records. That was three computers ago. It was also back in the days of DS3. I never even installed it on my last two computers, and I never used it in DS4, and the scenes were *all* built well in DS4. I don't even *have* any saved scenes earlier than 2012.
Oh well, deleting the stupid things doesn't seem to make any difference in the scene. So I'll just have to live with it util it stops.
It started up after a particularly nasty program quit, so that was probably it. I may need to reinstall Studio. Which I probably will eventually. I'm in the middle of a project and have a couple more scenes to build, first.
They may have been in a scene someone else made, or they may have been created when the plug-in was installed but not visible at the time.
I get them all the time too. I think they may sometimes be included in models so when the model is loaded, the invisible reality file is also loaded, then when merging and deleting starts, the reality files start multiplying.
What I'm currently dealing with is character models that I did myself in Studio in the last 3-4 months. As in, load the base, apply morphs, choose a skin and a wig, dress it in a costume and save the file. Done in DS 4.12 on a computer that does not have Reality installed. I have no clue of where these links are coming from. One of these characters came in with over 1500 of them.
Well after having the program hang on me and having to force quit a half a dozen times, I gave up and reinstalled.
Performance is no better, and I'm still being buried in Reality Scene Data entries.
These issues, did they start at a particular time? There's still the possibility something you bought might be the culprit and somehow tends to save with your scenes.
Maybe you can narrow the the time frame when it started happening and see if any products are carrying these values in your default setup.
Does this happen if you start and save new scenes or just this project?
I can definitely narrow the time frame to the past couple of weeks. And I can't really tie it to any newly installed product, since I cannot see why installing a character, or a prop, or a texture set would affect the program's ability to open a previously saved file without adding a lot of gibberish.
I could see that possibly messing with the morph of a character in a saved file, or having something load as a grey box, because something went screwy with the data file, but taking over a half hour to load a saved scene of a dressed and posed single human figure, and having it come in with about 40 of these fake data items makes no sense at all.
It's even added these things to a scene which was built in the past couple of weeks -- and definitely has no Reality associations in it.
I DO remember a particularly nasty program crash shortly before all this started up, and am more inclined to suspect that as having skewed something. But the fact is that I've reinstalled the program and there has been no improvement in performance. If there's something somewhere else I haven't found it. I checked the DAZ stuff in my User account and saw thothing related to Reality.
The scenes that have been most affected by the gibberish are for the most part saved character scenes created over the past 3-4 months. All but one has come in with the garbage. Also various illustration scenes for the current project created over the past 2 and a half weeks. I've only reopened a couple of them since I rendered them one came in with the garbage, the other not.
Frankly, I suspect it has nothing whatsoever to do with the Reality Plughin, but is merely idenifying it as being related to the Reality Plugin.
And, as annoying as it is, it's vastly to be prefered to having everything load as grey boxes.
It certainly does not have to do with you not having Reality. An example is that I bought a cloud creator today on sale, and suddenly I got a pop up everytime I clicked geometry: it said something about building geometry. I had to wait 2 to 5 seconds each time. Which is annoying I can tell you. I immediately de installed the product and the problem was gone. So a script could be running without your knowledge.
Daz ease of use comes from having a lot of things run by default, but sometimes developers (unwittingly) add things that don't pan out. I am not sure how to proceed in your case. but turning everything off, plugins, scripts, products would be a start, try saving new empty scenes / loading if that keeps your files clean.
30 minutes for a duf file to load seems extremely long, and maybe it is a bloating file which can happen if memory isn't properly managed in the save file and or the file isn't ending properly. So something is being saved along your normal data.
Well, I finally dug into TimeMachine and restored a version of the program from about three weeks ago. I'm still getting program hangs, but so far I've not had anything come in with the fake data scene files.
You'd think a computer with a 64-bit OS and 64GB of Ram could open up a scene of one dressed and morphed character in something under 15 minutes, though.
