Tatt's All Folks - worked fine at first

I applied a body tattoo to a female characterwhich covered the right arm and right side of the torso.  It was rendering fine for the first series of images, then I parented the tattoo to her right pectoral, did another render and saved the character.  I tried to make more renders a few days later, the tattoo's showing when she's inm neutral position, but disappears the moment I assign a pose.  It was working fine before, I'm baffled as far as why it's no longer workingsad

  • "I applied a body tattoo" can you give a little more info what type of body tattoo it is?

Judging by the fact that you "parented" the tattoo I am assuming either a decal or geoshell base?

Ok found it, Sorry I missed the product name in the thread title...

"These tattoos are made with Iray decals"

It sounds like the Iray decal is losing it's focus as to where the tattoo should be projected.

It could be part of the save process or the way the decal is parented to the projection area.

I just did a few tests and the decals seem to do ok through the saving process with parenting applied.

So I suspect that something is going wrong in the direction of the decal and where it is projecting on to the figure when it changes position with the new poses. You could try parenting and pointing the decal with different bones to see if you get a better results, but you may need to just adjust the tattoo final position manually.

This is one of the main reasons why I go with a geoshell over a decal in most cases.

Yeah, seems to work fine as long as my character is standing, the tattoo's visible, when she lies down it's out of focus...not sure if I need to rotate on the X, Y or Z axis.

  • Unless I'm mistaken, rotate the tattoo decal on the Y axis until it's visible on her torso ?  The only problem is that it's only visible in iRay and the changes seem to work in slow mo

  • It's hard to say which way it needs to be rotated exactly, as a decal is like a projector it needs a specific aspect pointing directly at the surface you require the decal to project on to.

By default the decal will project backwards along the blue arrow/handle or the Z axis. So if you are finding the Iray preview mode to be slow, turn it off and attempt to line things up as best you can before changing back to preview mode for the final touches. Decals also have a clipping region, so if it is to far away from the target the projection may not be visible.
