    There are quite a few cases where the normal maps have different details than the HD maps, so they need to be used together. In addition, sometimes HD add-ons add actual pore definition that can't be found on the normal maps, and that pore definition only shows up at SubD 4 or higher. Obviously, if you aren't doing a closeup, you would't need to worry about the pore detail.

    So, in most cases, at least that I've seen, I don't think they can be used interchangeably. I mean, they could...I just don't think they should.
