what would persuade Daz Inc there's value in updating Bryce and Carrara?

failing all of this a pretty decent Blender bridge easier to use and less confusing  than Diffeomorphic would go a long way

DAZ could make one without changing the rules on it's content, only the bridge itself subject to Blender TOS

the potential gained customers should help  pay for it

During sales I have come into possession by way of sales of both Bryce and Carrara and occasionally open them and stare at the screen. I don't have a clue where to start. I have gone to the forums for them and I believe I found a list of tutorials on one.

One overriding question I have though is what would be the best investment for packages to buy initially to get started? Today, David Brinnen's store is on sale, but what should I start with? After buying a lot of stuff in Daz initially, not understanding how useful it really was, I wasted a lot of money, I am cautious.

So maybe the two forums could have a 'welcome and what you need to know and baby steps' thread for Daz users to their products?

Bryce,  you have enough in Bryce without buying anything else until you get used to using it.   However David and Horo are both really good Bryce PAs.   David of course also does stuff for DS as well nowadays,  and even Poser (YAY  I use Poser as a polug-in for Bryce)

And that highlighted phrase is, in a nutshell, why Bryce is unlikely to ever get a major updated in the current DAZ economic system.  Something that you don't immediately need to buy hair and skimpwear for???  Horrors!

Ah yes. Daz3D acquired Bryce (v5) and Carrara (v3) to get new customers. Question is whether Daz3D still sees us as valid customers. After all, I only have around 56,000 Studio files occupying 23 GB - probably peanuts.

I would not call what you have peanuts, but by modern standards 23GB is not actually that much, particularly when you consider a single bikini product can need 2GB these days. I suspect you don't only have 11 types of bikinis in your runtime, but size is a tricky way to measure things.

Some of that disk size is ridiculous and speaks to a lack of optimization. A set of throw pillows has no right to use a gig of disk space. It's... Bad.

The notion that Daz can't stand the thought of anyone not needing to buy stuff from them immediately is... bizarre, given all the stuff Daz gives people free.

The conspiracy theory is a bit weird, guys.

It's not question of "immediately", it's a question of "how often."  Even when Bryce was still "current," there was never that much pre-made content made for it when compared to what was being produced for Poser and then DS.  If you'll recall, DAZ also gave away Bryce back when they first started giving away DS4, and that was probably a major litmus test to see if the market for more Bryce-specific content was there.  I don't know if the Bryce users just weren't buying it or if there just weren't enough PAs interested in making it, but either way, the Bryce-specific market never became as content hungry as the ones for DS and Poser, and DAZ is a company whose bread and butter has alway been in selling content, not software.  Since a larger market for Bryce specific content didn't develop, and the content that was being bought and used for it was mostly Poser/DS content anyway, it's appeal as a software to drive the store was much more redundant... and DAZ did keep giving Bryce away for quite a while, as well as Hexagon and Carrara for a bit, so you can't say that they didn't give it a chance.

Now, keep in mind that all of this was happening at a time when Poser, which had been the main driver of the store from the beginning, and DS were drifting apart in user bases, and Poser had already changed ownership multiple times just during the period that DAZ had been in business.  At that point it just becomes basic economics - why keep spending more money to keep developing Bryce in order to be feature-competitive with other landscaping software like VUE and be caught in the Smith Micro trap of being dependent on sales of new release upgrades as your major income stream?  Especially when your're faced with the urgent need to keep working on the lifeboat you've been building to keep your primary market afloat in case Poser simply ceased to be?   I've been in the same boat and done the same thing... when your resources are limited, it just makes sense to invest most of them in the way that will return the greatest benefit.

  • Locking this as it has become mired in somewhat circular speculation (and no one seems interested in Chohole's render challenge).
