Strand-based hair + Colorwerks Extreme rendering white?

I was trying my hand at giving the Daz Seal some fur to attempt to hide the weird external ears and otherwise make it look a bit more like an actual seal as opposed to some bizarre seal-sea lion hybrid.  I got the hair into a shape that I was fairly happy with, so I saved it and went to add some color with the Colorwerks Extreme shaders.  However, even though that shader is supposed to work with strand-based hair, the fur just rendered all white, when I chose a brown and a grey as my two blend colors.  Since I just applied the shader to the strand-based hair material, my first thought was, okay, maybe I'm supposed to also apply it to that "skin" material zone.  But, when I tried that, it just made the the white solid color with no visible hairs.  I've also tried adding a solid color as well as an image map to each blend color, but that didn't change a thing.  Does anyone have any idea how I can make color appear properly?

I attached an image of what the render ends up looking like.
