Gen 3 hair isn't very old. It won't have d-force, but other than that should be still be quite usable.

If just using that hair doesn't work for you, what is it about the hair you want to see? Is it length, waves, something else? There are lots of medium hair options, if you had something specific in mind that might narrow it down.

do what I do, use multiple hairs with the same diffuse maps maybe paint a bit of strand based hair on the head too with those maps for tendrils

there are quite a few great hair shader products here that are great for making older hair models (with pre-dual lobe iray surfaces)  look great.
