Daz model with Iray materies to Vue

kenmokenmo Posts: 1,149

I know how to export Daz objects to Vue. However when I export a model that is using Iray, I need to re-apply the materials available to me in Vue except for those materials using bitmaps. Is there a way to convert the Iray materials to a Vue format?

PS: I don't even know if this is technically possible but thought I would ask as this is a common problem I have.

Cheers and Happy New Year...

I've used Vue for a variety of projects, and I've always had to manually rebuild the materials. If you come across some way to do it please be sure to pass it along! :)

Tom - I certainly will... Hoping there is a fix for this.

There isn't anything to fix. It's a different render engine and as such handles material differently. You will get the same issues trying to use other render engines such as Vray, maxwell, luxrender, etc.

I also posted this question to the Facebook group "Vue Tutorials Tips and Tricks" and got this reply from Lars Braad Andersen and thought I should share it here...

You probably already know this, but anyway ( - for others here as well :) ):
In my experience, the best way to export from DS is as .obj - very predictable and with good fidelity.
The exported bitmaps will go to a subfolder, and the material descriptions will be in the accompanying .mtl file.
The non-bitmap/"procedural" materials will only retain the colours.
    - In my experience, the iray materials won't export with the PBR bumps or normals, where as they do with most 3Delight exports!
If it's of essential value for the look, I may add the PBR specular, bumps and displacement maps etc in Vue, by mimicking the settings in DS and copying the proper maps from the original DS texture folder.
    - With the procedural iray mats I replace those with Vue materials (glass, metals etc.).
I don't think there are "quick work-arounds" for editing exported materials in Vue, other than "edit all materials". The option to save multi-materials rarely works properly :)
If you already know that you'll be exporting any models for use in Vue, I suggest you use the 3Delight materials, if provided.
    - The collada (.dae) option is only useful if you want to use an animation or have the "bones" retained to adjust posing in Vue. Often the results are useless, with broken meshes etc. Also, the materials always only export the "diffuse" and transparency channels and with 100% reflectivity.
    - My versions(s) of Vue don't import .fbx, but in DS the mats are translated to 3Delight versions upon import.
