Photoshop image export from DS?

I recently upgraded to 4.12 version of DS and despite what the manual states, when I try to export/save my rendered image from IRAY, I do not have an option to save as a PSD file. In Poser, saving to PSD retains an alpha channel along with the image so that you can mix images in Photoshop (which I do a lot). I could have sworn previous DS versions had PSD export capability. I'm also unable to find the means to turn off filtering on background images and they seem to be blurring slightly. In Poser you can turn this off in the materials room. Is there an option for this in DS?

Anyway, my main question for this post is does DS not have PSD export option? The manual says it does. I can import a PSD as a texture for example - but no image option when saving rendered image. Sorry if this is a stupid question.  I need an alpha channel and for some reason even TIFF and PNG are not exporting with alpha channels. I've tried with a background (environment) image and without and it makes no difference. All I can get out is a flat image in JPG, TIFF, BMP, or PNG format. What happened to PSD?

Thanks!

UPDATED:

You can disregard every other post in this thread. If you're having the same issue I describe above, DS does not export in Photoshop (PSD) format. You can however get your alpha channel cut-out render to export as a PNG file. What I had going wrong is described below:

I figured it out. In the Environment tab I was selecting BACKDROP, and adding an image using the BACKGROUND arrow to BROWSE and then add an image to line my prop up with. Once aligned, I was simply clicking on the BACKGROUND arrow again and selecting NONE to remove the image from the backdrop. This does not, however apparently get rid of the background. Now it remains a default white color apparently. You utterly have to reset the BACKDROP option to NONE again to get ride of the background. Once I did that I started getting a PNG with fully transparent background upon image export.

Not in a position to test DS export options at the moment as about to leave for work but if it doesn't then you can use this, in 3DL mode to gnerate masks which might be of use, especially as it works on surfaces or objects.

I can export as a png with a transparent background.

  • I get alpha channels in TIF format. to get a valid one, there has to be no world dome/background though when rendering.

Yeah, I read the points about PNG and TIF in the manual and when I export, my model is just rendered on a white background. There is no transparency at all. I'm familiar with how alpha and transparent images work (been using photoshop and Poser since the 1990's) - but even with no background or environmental image added - just a model and an IRAY render - I got no PSD option or alpha export with either PNG or TIF. It's quite bizarre as previous versions of DS didn't do that.

Does IRAY not have alpha capability? I've always rendered with the older 3Delight engine until now but if IRAY can't produce an alpha - man - that's odd and a bit of a major oversight, huh? I just can't find any documentation on it and I'm still waiting on a response from DAZ support.

Iray in DS 4.12.0.86 (the general release version) will *definitely* export PNG and EXR with an alpha channel; I've done so repeatedly. (I haven't however tested TIF recently).

If it's not exporting with an alpha channel, this problem is specific to something in your settings, not any oversight in Iray.

Iray produces an alpha channel, I do it quite often, attached is an example of a .png I just did (doesn't look like it, but open it in an image editor and the white backgraound is actually an alpha channel, unless the foum software changes it to a jpg).. You do need to turn "Draw Dome" of in "Render Settings>Environment". You also need to have no physical background image in the scene

If your scene has a background, then there will be no transparency. If you are rendering in Iray using a HDR, check that the "Draw Dome" setting in the Render Settings/Environment is off.

DS handles transparency just fine, so long as there is some in the render then it can be saved, but as others have said above ensure it is saved as PNG or TIFF, not jpg, then when the render is

Er DAZ Studio itself has never exported as a PSD file.  It sounds like you may not have installed the new version of Photoshop Bridge that goes with the new version.

Also, DAZ Studio doesn't export .TIFF with a clear background, but the TIFF does have the information to pull an alpha matte.  Saving as a .png WILLl give you a clear backgound as long as there isn't another setting overriding it (or somethng in the render itself that ompletely blocks the background area like a skydome.).

Where did you find a manual that says you can save a render in PSD format? The User Guide rendering chapter 8.8.2 says "To save the render you must first enter a name for the image in the 'Name' field. Next choose a file format from the drop down menu. You can choose from .jpg, .png, .tiff, and .bmp for still images."
