Tutorial -- How to edit your post titles.

I may be venturing into grumpy old man territory here, but I have finally had enough of looking at post titles that contain misspellings, extra words, and poor grammar. Yes, everyone makes mistakes, but sometimes these post titles are in long running threads that have been around for months, if not years. I grind my teeth every time I see the offending titles in my unread posts list.

So, instead of just complaining and raising my blood pressure, I thought I would take some positive action. I can only assume that those who don't correct the mistakes either don't know they can or don't know how. So here is a step by step tutorial. With pictures. :)

1. Click on the gear icon in the upper right of the forums page.image

2. Select "My Discussions."

3. Find the offending title. 4. On the right side of the topic, hover to the left of the star and the gear icon will appear. image

5. Click the gear, and you will enter edit mode. Not only can you edit the first post, but you can also correct the mistakes that have been in the title since day one. Easy, right?

[For the sharp eyed among you, yes, I know that my thread title is horribly mangled. However, I can and will fix it. ;)  I just wanted to illustrate the problem.]

LOL, I guess maybe I need a tutorial in how to get images into my post. :D

    And "eddit" but as someone that double clicks or fat finger keys all the time I'm not going to laugh.

    Many people on these forums aren’t native English speakers, many of those who are have a poor grasp on the language, and above all else, many people just don’t care enough to fix what mistakes they do make. I don’t think knowing how to edit thread titles is really the problem.

    A much easier way of doing it is to click on the gear icon on the top post, the one next to the star, then click "Edit",  it's the top option in the drop down list, on the page that now appears you can edit your thread title.

    And for an encore,  just in case you felt like it you can also use that same page to send your thread to a different forum, by chaging the category

    Then you clcik Save Comment at the bottom   and lo behold,  all done.

    edit    and of course if you don't have your display font set to typo-ese you click save, rather than clciking it.

    And I think, generally, the non-native speakers are probably more conscientious than the rest of us. (I hope I spelled conscientious correctly.)

    And, Google. Even if you don't care that much, it doesn't take long to look up how to spell something.

    must admit I have been guilty of correcting individuals who consistently spell something wrong in multiple posts and it irks me, the word ridiculous seems to trigger this in me, there are several posters who spell it in a very peculiar way.

    Ah  yes I can rememember seing you correcting spelling,  Not sure if it was riddykewlowse that was the word involved.  
    I always think it is unfair to highlight spelling, given as we are an international community, and many of the people who post to the forums are doins so in a second, or even thrid language. It's strange how English speakers, be they British english speakers, American english speakers or Australain english speakers, all seem to think nothing of the fact that everybody else speaks English, even if not perfectly.
    Some of them don't even use our sort of fonts when writing or typing in their first language.  Have you ever wondered if those countires which use kanji or hanzi, hanza etc  suffer from dyslexia.  I know I used to watch a Pakistani colleague take notes at meetings and wonder what a dyslexic would make of writing from left to right all the time. have you ever tried doing that  (obviously here I am talking to those who don't use right to left handwriting)

    This may be an international forum, but using a commonly accepted language, and the commonly accepted national variations makes it a sight easier to read and understand.

    I don't just jump in and do it first time but repeat offenders will keep doing it and I think they need to learn like anything else, if nobody tells you you have a booger hanging from your nose they are not doing you any favours.

    Orthographic punctilio and lexical niceties are all very well, but let us not deter participation. (Yes, I am aware that in the pot/kettle stakes I am a lump of charcoal.)

    Yeah, I didn't want to be "that guy". So for a long time I have ignored the problem. But today for some reason I couldn't take it anymore. Especially since it is so, so easy to fix.

    I think half the people on this planet including certain high profile individuals in very high positions, need to learn how to edit their posts and perhaps take a nanosecond to skim whatever the hell they just wrote to alter it to bare minimum of comprehension, or at least, if failing that, turn on predictive text or friggin spellcheck.

    This does not include people for whom the post was not in their native language, were sick or otherwise not well or not technically alive while posting... nor is this statement directed towards these forums, just towards the internet as a whole... especially social media (ugh).

    Also it's not directed towards myself, because I'm morally opposed to proper grammar, correct spelling and making sense.

    But the silliness in English reflects its provenance more than Sindarin and Quenya :) When non-native English speakers mispell things, it often makes more sense than the correct spelling. Why can't we just have one orthographic symbol for every phoneme and one phoneme for every orthographic symbol? You shouldn't be affected by things that happened 944 years ago just to ask if we're having beef, chicken, or pork for dinner.

    As a Mother who raised 2 children of my own, and  a step child  can I tell you that trying to teach phonemes to a dyslexic screws them up even more. Luckily we moved and my son went to a different scholl for the last 2 years of his primary education,  with a teacher who understood his disability and helped him.  He scored enough in the 11 plus exams that he got a scholarship pass to the grammar school in the next town as our Town had made all schools into comprehensive schools.

    Wel, vir iemand wat eintlik Afrikaans is en Engels my tweede taal is, praat, lees en skryf ek better Engels as Afrikaans. Dit irriteer my grensloos wanneer julle Amerikaners, Engelse en Australiers nie reg kan spel nie. Dit frustreer my as mense wat Engels as 'n tweede taal gebruik nie reg kan spel nie, as ek dit kan dien, Dan kan hulle ook. Verbeel julle net hoeveel meet dit my irriteer en frustreer as mense wat Engels praat self nie eers kan reg spel nie.

    Well, for someone who is actually Afrikaans and English is my second language, I speak, read and write better English than Afrikaans. It annoys me boundless when you Americans, English and Australians can't play correctly. It frustrates me if people who use English as a second language cannot spell correctly, if I can serve it, then so can they. Imagine just how much it annoys and frustrates me when people who speak English can't even play it right.

    @WendyLuvsCatz LOL. Though "spel" is translated either as "a game" or, in this case, it should be translated as "spell". And because my phone is set to English, it sometimes auto-correct Afrikaans words, like "dien" should have been "doen", so it should read "if I can do it, then so can they".

    Unfortunately this thread has not helped. Most of the perpetually mangled thread titles are still around.
