When I was in college eons ago as a froshman the physics department (1985) had holographic displays that where encased in things like blown glass. As you walked around a cylinder of glass a holograph of a bust of a woman was following you and simultaneously blowing you a kiss. There were others too but that's the one I remember. The holographs were more ghostly looking than those in that video although they were partly in color too.

I think such a display makes much more sense as a 3D pair of wrap-around glasses or wrap-around headset like Cyclops or that Star Trek New Generations dude.
