Clear pose, restore pose, zero pose???

Could someone explain the difference among, "clear pose", "restore pose" and "zero pose" actions in a simple way?

I'm quite confused now.

My understanding is so far...

"Clear pose"...something to do with animation
"Restore pose"...restore a pose back to a saved condition
"Zero pose"...a default pose when a figure is loaded.

Well, I've never seen the difference between "restore" and "zero".
My comprehension must be wrong then...

Which version of studio are you working in?  They've made several changes since 4.9 amd iot's a bit different in the subsequent versions.   In the current version, 4.12, if you have a figure posed, then select "figure" then"memorize" and then "Memorize figure pose", that saves that exact pose, whereas hitting figure, then Zero and then Zero Pose takes your figure back to the default A pose for the G8s and the default T pose for the rest of the Genesis and earlier figure lines.

The clear functions, as you surmised, are for animation and will affect the chosen items' status within the animation timeline.

    Thank you very much.
    Wow, now I got it.
I didn't know well about the memorize function. I see, YES, "memorize" and "restore", it's working.
I think I can use this function more often from now on.
    I really appreciate.

    BTW I'm using 4.12.

Memorize sets the default values, Restore sets the item back to its defaults. Poser does have a similar command, as I recall. The default values are stored with the parameter, locally as long as you don't use File>Save As>Support Assets>Modified Assets (which you shouldn't, unless for some reason you want every version of that item to load with those values).

  • Also, I've noticed when I hit zero pose, whatever morphs are on the character are lost and it goes to the default G8 character. Once I rendered out an entire animated sequence and didn't catch it until I put all the shots together and was like wait, why does Hann Mei not look like Hann Mei here?

So this is a new "feature" with 4.12? Should be reported IMO.

Not a bug in DS 4.12 ALL of the '' restore " figure options are working correctly for me.

Hmm this is all very confusing. As I mentioned somewhere else, I've never had any problems with the three DS builds I use (4.7, 4.9 and 4.10 public build). Now this seems to work for some users, and for others, not so much with the newest build. I'm kind of glad I'm not a professional bug tracker...

I would suspect it was either a misfire, going to Figure rather than figure pose, or that the particular "shapes" used had their type, correctly or not, set to Modifier>Pose.

  • Oh, okay, I always thought this was just a normal part of the zero reset....good to know, as per usual in my life, it's a problem that I happen to stumble across that no one else has lol. When I have some time later today, I'll check to see if it's that way with other characters, I only know it was happening with Hann Mei because I was doing an animated series with her as the main character.

I mostly use "memorize figure", then I can choose to restore either just the pose, shape or both;)

That's a great idea. I'm going to start doing that myself!

Personally I'd not play around with the figure default values, but rather save a preset.
