Installing via DIM -> zip and dsx files

When downloading via DIM, does it download zip and dsx files, or does it download the zip file, and then create the dsx file after installing the content in the zip? Mainly wondering what the small dsx file does, or is for.

The .dsx file charcterises the zip, it is all you need to get update notifications even if the product isn't installed and the zip isn't there (for example if you want to keep the zips on an off-line external drive to save space on the system).
