I can't argue against any of the choices here, and for a fantasy / sci-fi art fan, picking a favorite to me is almost like asking me to pick a favorite child. I just can't. For each of the artists mentioned in this thread, when I hear their name, I can picture one (or more) of their works that really struck me.
In many cases, their artwork is so identified with books for me, that I can't imagine the books without them.
I think one thing that always struck me about all of these artists is that I would see one of their paintings and I wanted to know the story. Who is he/she? Where are they? What are they doing? Their art tends to pull you into the world they were creating and made you want to know more.
Boris Vallejo's best work was his earlier work before art directors allowed him so much freedom. His later work is just painting body builders still in poses that make no sense to illustrate the stories anymore. I meanLinks removed
The 1979 work is better.
Turned in to a Boris formula Art. later on. He can paint yes but the earlier illustrations actually were illustrations.
I agree. I was perusing through he and Julie's web site and all of their current stuff are all not fantastical or special. Boris was at one time one of my all time favorite fantasy artists but now .... meh!
I have to go with Frank Frazetta, but then again I served at Ft. Hood where Death Dealer was the III Corps mascot and where they now have several statues of the Death Dealer as the symbol of III Corps, including one they deploy with. (With Frank's permission.)
When your work gets added to Military Heraldry for a unit as storied as III Corps, that is, at least to me, impressive.
Well Frank was the master that others dreamed of and tried to emulate. I used to think Boris was a close second back in the day!
I always preferred Rowena's art. Frank's doesn't resonate with me that much. Boris is good when he isn't just illustrating body builders. I need more going on in a Scene than a fit figure standing around flexing.
For me, one of the best is Luis Royo. And always loved the work of Keith Parkinson.
Luis is supperb, modern day but tends allot in gothic, mystical, dark, moody, exciting.....
I too loved Boris and many others. But Franzetta, wow! Even studying the masters I always liked the artists like Raphael. Which is why I really love Franzettas style.
I read through this thread just to see if someone would mention Parkinson... one of the few people I've cried at the loss of that I never met in person (like 2 ever, Jade doesn't count, we never met in person but I knew him and that wasn't crying, more like blawling.) such a terrible loss, he was getting better and better.
Yes, Keith was a stand out fantasy artist taken way to early.
Here V4 "character " Inspired by the works of Boris Vallejo and Julie Bell :
