Geometry Editing Selection

Is there a way to automatically select the edges of something with the geometry selection tool? To be clear, I am thinking about assigning trim zones to wardrobe items or making weight maps to apply dforce to hair items, as both those tasks would be a breeze if the tool could somehow detectc the limits of selected geometry.

Not as such, though you might be able to do something with right-click>Geometry Selection>Select By Edge Count...
There are several methods for selection. One can select by surfaces yes. Right-click options in the viewport.
If making new areas, then the selections are manual. [lasso, drag, etc.]
maybe the select loop command in polygon mode would work. you'd have to manually select two adjacent polygons along every edge you want to work on, though. and make sure you're in add selection mode while you're doing it, or the edge(s) you've previously selected won't remain so.
