Dual gpu which one to connect to the monitor?

I've just ordered a larger case so I can fit both my cards in. My motherboard has one pci-e 2.0 and one pci-e 3.0. As far as I understand it makes very little difference which is in which. If this is the case then my 2060 will go into the 2.0 as it will have better airflow around it. Now which one do I use for the display? I can use the 1050ti leaving all of the 8gb and processing power of the 2060 free for the heavy lifting. Or do I use the 2060 for the display so that I have more options to use both on renders. That 0.6gb of the 1050's 4gb used by the display and other things I'm doing might be the difference between using both or just one to render. 3rd option keep the back of my pc accessible and swap if I think my scene will fit into 4gb.

  • Windows always reserves a video buffer on every consumer GPU. Put the 2060 in the 3.0 slot and use it for video out. You'll get better performance when you watch movies or play games.

    Thanks, I was hoping that would make sense to someone. So really the 1050 is just there as a bit of a luxury for faster rendering when I have smaller scenes. Otherwise not used.

    It really depends on what you do with your computer. If you play games, then that 2060 should be connected to monitor, but if you do heavy rendering close to 2060 memory limit, then that 1050ti might be a better option. Anyways, in my opinion that 3rd option is the best choice here, since then you swap freely depending on your situation,

    I'd use the 1050 for the monitor(s).

    Save the 2060 for rendering. I wouldn't bother with the 1050.

    I use a 980ti for rendering. I use a 970 to drive 3 x 2560x1440 monitors.

    I almost never use the 970 for rendering, except very rarely to run a quick test scene as the 980ti is already rendering (I use instances a lot, or did until Daz messed that up).

    I also have a Threadripper and it can also be used for rendering, often enough considering the RAM limitations on the 980ti.

    What do you mean by the instances part?

  • This is brilliant. It all comes down to personal preference then I guess. I suppose its like most things with, computer setups try out different things and find out which works best for you. Thanks for the input.
  • If you use the 1050, any scene over 3.4 gigs will go to the CPU. If you use the 2060, the limit is 4 gigs. I'd use the 2060.
