Questions for those making Non-photorealistic renderings (NPR)

There have been some interesting NPR artworks in Art-studio section

For people who worked on this kind of renders, I would like to hear your thoughts about the followings:

  • What render engine do you use in your workflow? 3delight? Carrara? Poser Superfly? Blender Cycles? etc..
  • Why that engine over others?
  • Would you say you spend much more time fine-tuning the lighting and materials vs the "post works"? or vice versa?

    After going through the postwork it is hard to defffirintiate between Iray and 3delight. I found 3delight images contains more contrast and thus postwork is faster.

    * 3delight and Iray (Eevee is one of my favourite)

    * There is no comparison because all above mentioned engines are for different type of renders or those are not similar things to qualify for comparison.

    * It depends. Less than 3 minutes to 3 days.

    Answering primarily to let you know that HeadWax (frequenter of at least two of the three links you provided) sometimes goes on a trip this time of year and may not be able to answer.  He * uses Carrara and * does a lot of postwork, often going for a painterly look.  Won't speculate on why HeadWax uses Carrara.

    Personally,

    * I use Carrara

    * because (a) that is what I learned using, (b) it could load both Cr2 (Poser) and DUF (Daz3D) files natively, (c) it has a native Toon Pro! render filter, (d) it has a host of render Multi-passes to aid with postwork, (e) it has native modeling and rigging tools for me to make my own claymation style figures, and (f) it has a free plugin to add GMIC post render filters automatically.

    * depends because sometimes I am going for a flat toon or comic look, but others I am going for a stop-motion look.

    Note - Daz3D says that it no longer supports Carrara.  This means that the (b) part of my answer is becoming less true slowly as the Poser and Daz3D rigging worlds evolve differently.

    I sometimes use post work with Iray, somewhat more often use LineRender9000 or the scripted 3dl outlines.

    But for speed I usually fall back onto PWToon in 3DL, with a fairly stable AoA Distant and ambient light I've worked out to my satisfaction.

    Which approach I take depends on patience.

    If you check out my DA gallery, there's a lot of examples: https://www.deviantart.com/willbear/gallery/
