no iray for Old West Firearms?

Hi,

I can not find any typical iray remark for Old West Firearms Vol 1-3. Does it mean there is no iray?

    Good catch!

Looking over the PA's catalog, the most recent products before the weapons are all indicating Iray presets, or at least Optimized for Iray, the latter usually means 3DL textures that have been tweaked to also look good in Iray.)

So I'm thinking they use Iray presets, and it's just an oversight that none of the products mention it. (But I could be wrong.)

At this point you can probably assume Iray if not otherwise mentioned.

LOL, there is always IRAY, sometimes you just have to add it. I have the default Iray uber shader saved as a script in the drop down and whenever a product doesn't come with Iray settings, I just apply it and then tweak the settings, easy peazy.

    I just checked, yes, Iray

    ok, thank you.

I asked also because the product pics looks like old renders and also the pic embedded iray sign isn' there.

Most products at Daz now are all Iray and then some 3DL. We also don't use the rendered in Iray badge any more. Texture maps for these sets include Base, Metallic, Normals, and Roughness to give yo3u the best Iray renders possable in Daz Studio.

Most PAs do still use the Iray badge, and the ones that don't mention that their products are intended for Iray.

Not all products released are necessarily Iray compatible, unfortunately. Perhaps rare, but still happens.

I love when folks argue with the PA about the PA's product. no

It's called customer feedback, which shouldn't be viewed as a bad thing. The PA can choose what they want to do or not do with the information. For myself, If I'm looking at a product in the store and don't know when it was added to the store, I'm going to assume it's a 3Delight product if it doesn't state somewhere that it has Iray optimized materials, just like all the older products that are only optimized for 3Delight. In this case, I know it's new, but I'm still glad someone asked.

It's also useful to get insider information to adjust expectations appropriately, and to get insight on matters you might not be aware of.

For example, if you don't know when it was added to the store, keep in mind that Iray came to Daz very roughly with SKU 21000 or so. Anything after that has an increasingly greater likelihood of being Iray and, toward 50k-60k, to be Iray only without comment.

Anything after about SKU 56000 is probably from the past year.

So I'd say if it's after 40000, assume it's Iray unless otherwise indicated.

There's also sometimes a clue in the What's Included section of the store page — 3Delight and Iray use different named surfaces parameters, so if there's a mention of textures for e.g. Metallic or Roughness, which don't exist in 3Delight, then it must be Iray materials.

Edit: just bought set 1 — very nice indeed, all the important bits are moving parts, the shooty bits are separate brass casings and lead bullets, and everything renders nice and quickly. I just wish it was a bit more obvious which ammo types go with which gun.

Looking forward to getting sets 2 and 3 before too long.

  • hasn't there on very rare occassion sometimes been a new release that wasn't iray? When that migration from that other store happened not all of that was iray but was classified as new so there's always still a chance of new stuff not being iray too depending on different reasons and we stil often see a demand for 3delight instead of iray

The RDNA transfers were marked by having RDNA in the Artist line of the store page, and "DAZ Studio" in the Compatible Software line.

As a PA I want to release all my products as Iray ready because surfaces react to light in a realistic way with true reflective properties, making objects look great. Though with trial and error you can get close with 3DL. Metals are where Iray really shines... sorry, and 3DL needs TLC. I have gone back to doing both for my products and it means sometimes taking an entire day trying to find the right formula for some surfaces. Hard to say how much it matters to the community but a handful have said thanks.

DZ's work is impeccable and if you are drawn to this subject worth the purchase regardless.

That's a big exception, and why I keep saying things like 'generally' and 'probably.' There are exceptions.

But they are rare and growing more rare.

You know it's funny, now that wowie has released aweSurface for scripted pathtracing with 3Delight and is sharing it with the community for FREE, finally opening up the door for DS users to proper physically based rendering (PBR) metalness / roughness workflow,  PAs don't know about it, users don't know about it, DAZ ignores it, and they could have done what wowie did, years ago.

I own many of your products, and have a number of your new ones wishlisted until I can afford them. I've usually been the first to complain over the lack of 3DL presets for new products, however, after I started using PBR rendering almost exclusively, I find that it doesn't matter if I have to convert conventional 3DL or IRay to aweSurface, it takes the same amount of time. But still, when I see that there are 3DL presets included, I can be certain that there are no custom IRay shaders that simply can't be converted. So thank you for supporting my favorite render engine! Finally, some metals for you:)
