"A valid postgres whatever" is only the beginning of my woes

Sometime in the last 10-15 day (yes, I was away from DS for a bit. It happens) I lost just about every bit of usability, both in 4.12.0.86 and in the 4.12.1 public build.

• Started getting that infamous CMS error.
• Loading existing scenes is glacial. One of my quick test scenes took 10 minutes, instead of 30 seconds.
• Same with adding a character.
• Can't search, either in Smart Content or Content Library.
• Listing are only partially complete, like if I hit sort "A-Z" I might get "A-J" or "Z-A" might give me "Z-R"
• Can't render. Click render, the window pops up, and does nothing.
• I don't remember simple scenes or single characters using 4gigs of RAM before.

If PostgreSQL can't be accessed then Smart Content, the Presets tabs of property panes, and the categories and products list in the Content Library pane would be empty - if they are not, even with errors, then soemthing is managing to make a connection whatever the pop-up says - and if there was a problematic connection that might well make a lot of other things slow (though I'm not sure it would account for everything you describe). The usual suspect here would be an update to the security software used on the system.
