Some items I download include a poser version. Since I don't own poser, Should I delete the poser files?

It depends. If there’s also a full DS version included then yes, you can remove the poser version.

However a lot of older content (like all items for V4, for example) is provided in poser format, with sometimes separate additional DS materials. In that case you need the poser files, which provide the actual item. 

Basically, if there’s a “DS core” download file included then you only need that. If there’s a “poser core” only, or a “poser core” and a “studio CF”, then you need the poser files too.
