of course had not saved the character ... and things were coming along I think ... was playing with lighting and stuff ... as well as scene ... but all of a sudden, the entire program was gone .. no warning nothing, just up and closed while i was reading email ... poof ... nothing saved.
DS needs an autosave function ...
I need to save my work more often.

...is this the latest 4.12 general release or the beta?
*doh!* I feel your pain.
No matter how many times this happens, and how often I'm usually careful to save regularly, there's always that time when I'm engaged with scene-building/tweaking that I forget to save ... and that's when it crashes.
I can't even tell you how many times I've been bitten by the disappearing DS "bug" ;). It's not really a bug, it's obviously a fault, and I always remind myself to save often, but...when you're concentrating on something, that kinda goes by the wayside ;).

the 4.12 general release. its happened couple of times now
To alleviate the pain, I usually try and out do whatever I was doing so I can forget about what I had.
Happens with art and music...everything really.
I've even erased huge Photoshop files with lots of layers thinking I was closing a non-essential image.
I've made the Render-temp-bin a desktop shortcut for when Daz dies during a render.
I've had the same, and also 4.12 general release just locking up, but not with the 4.12 Beta (which is not as up to date as the general release, I believe). So I've been mostly using the Beta for setting up scenes/characters.
I got an update to the beta recently and haven't had it crash on me since then. The previous version, which I believe is the current general release crashed on me a good deal.
........if I started a thread everytime DS crashed .....
it is possibly my most crashy program
Yeah, I think I'd say the same. One of the other programs I use from time to time is Source Filmmaker*, which is beta version abandonware with all the unfixed bugs that implies. I don't get a fraction as many crashes as I do with DS.
* Okay, the graphical quality is "video games from several years ago", but it's got a very solid interface (once you get past one or two quirks), so I actually enjoy the experience of using it far more than I do DS.
DS is very stable for me but it probably depends on what you're using it for and how, I'm only doing still renders and not using very large HDRIs.
I have been getting a lot of program quits while using the clothing conversion scripts. Not so much when just building and setting up a scene.
i was using 4.10 and it seemed to just fly along .. i dont remember many, if any, sudden closures.
When I bought my new system, I "upgraded" to 4.12 general release, to take advantage of my RTX video card.
I was thinking it was my new system crashing it, so I'm happy to see its sort of common. Not happy its happening to anybody though.
boom ... crash. DS just disappeared ... gone ... again tonight after a 3 hour session with no saving by me..when will I learn? wonder if thats in the log?
