Needing to choose a CPU

I'm working up building a new System,

The GPU is a no brainier, it is going to be a Nvidia's GeForce 2080 Super or Ti.

The bigger question is the CPU. The choices are AMD's Ryzen 9 36xx or Intel's 10990X.

So the Ask, does anyone experience with DAZ Studio running on a third gen Ryzen CPU.

Thanks for the Input in advanced.

Spec below:

Intel Core i9 9900K

  • # of CPU Cores 8
  • # of Threads 16
  • Max Boost Clock Up to 5.0GHz (signal Core boost)
  • Base Clock 3.6GHz
  • L2 + L3 cache: 16MB
  • Max Memory Size: 128 GB
  • Memory Types: DDR4-2666
  • Max # of Memory Channels: 2

  • PCI Express® VersionPCIe 3.0 x16
  • Max # of PCIe Lanes 16 - Up to 1x16, 2x8, 1x8+2x4 (another intel page say it is 40 lanes for this chip but are they counting the Lanes off the X399 chipset?)
  • Default TDP / TDP 95w
  • MSRP: 449 USD
  • Chipset: Intel Z390

AMD Ryzen 9 3900X

  • # of CPU Cores 12

  • It's almost personal preference, do you prefer one brand over the other?

I used to be all Intel, but took a chance on a  Threadripper 2990WX and I love it.  Not sure about the 3rd gen, but I think the extra cores will trump the slight loss of clock speed.

    Does this help: https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i9-9900K-vs-AMD-Ryzen-9-3900X/4028vs4044

I guess you also have PCI4.0 on the AMD chip which gives you the extra bandwidth for NVME drives etc.. so for me, I'd go for that.. but again, it's personal preference really.

im waiting for the 3950x which is 25% faster then the 3900x, the 3950x should be released in november which has 16 cores and destroys everything intel has, and set a new world record for cinebench

I got a first gen Threadripper and defintely glad i did.

You get more for less with AMD; sure, single core clock on gen 1 & 2 is slightly less, but ask yourself, slightly less than what? And does it matter?

... And then there's AMD who will not continually force a MB upgrade when they drop a new CPU iteration.

I just upgraded from a very old Intel i7 this weekend to the newest AMD Ryzen and could observe barely to no difference regarding Iray performance so I don't think the CPU has any major impact on Iray performance.

just bought a system with 3800x ... its "only" 8 core ... but double my old one ...

My entire system was $200 less than the cost of that threadripper ... but that must be a screamer.

Sorry, didn't ask this question to begin with.
No one has had any issue with DAZ Studio and the AMD Ryzen, I'm guessing.

    Yea fair point worth remembering.

But if you're gonna build a serious rig, then having something that can chomp through other multi-tasking jobs with some gusto will certainly help.

Not to mention that the newer CPUs will make a difference if Iray drops to CPU.

  • From a technical POV the combo of the R9 3900X and a X470 or X570 is clearly superior to the i9 9900k and Z390 except in gaming and in gaming the R9 is close enough for virtually everyone.

Get a X470 motherboard if you don't anticipate spending big bucks on PCIE gen NVME drives in the next 4 or 5 years. If you might want one or more of them in that time, and want to get the full performce out of them get the X570.

Waiting a month to get the 3950X is IMO not a great idea unless you have some tasks that are very heavily multithreaded, like Blender rendering, that can take advantage of 16c/32t.
