Primitives; how to "lock" multiple primitives together so they move as one item?

Primitives; how to "lock" multiple primitives together so they move as one item?

I am starting to work with the built-in Daz primitives to make fairly complex objects and I am having trouble with parenting these items so they work as one object.

example: create a log raft with multiple logs, a half deck, and pole rudder at the rear.  easy enough to build the primitives needed, and shaders make the raft look great, but parenting ???  basicly I create a group and parent everything to that group, but the raft "explodes" if I try to move the raft group!?

Anyone know, or have a guess, what I might have done wrong?

Parent them all to one of the primitives in the group or make a group (Create/New Group). When you parent them to one of the objects you want to move, you always have to select THAT object when moving because it is the parent and the others will follow. If you select one of the other objects, it's the same as moving an object independently.

@AllenArt, If I understand you I should -- 1. select one of the primitives as the primary primitive  and parent everything else to the primary, THEN create a 'raft group' by adding the primary primitive to that? then I can move the group, or do I have to open the group and move the primary primitive?

Nope, you can then just move the group :) In the scene tab, select the group (collapse the group, or if it isn't select the root).

Another option would be to set up the primitives as you like as the ONLY things in the scene, then export them as an .OBJ file. You can then import it as a single object, but you'll need to do rigging manually if you want moving parts.

If you go the export route you will want to use the Geometry tool assign different material names to the primatives otherwiseyou will get just one "default" material for everything.

Thanks for the tips Muneman and jestmart ... always more to learn so ... adding material zones, geometery tool and obj export-import and rigging to my list.

    thanks again.
