How to install DS to D drive using new DM (ver. 1.2.0.27)

I would like to install DAZ Studio program files and DAZ content files to D drive.

Though I already checked some previous discussions here, I still have some questions regarding the settings in Download Manager.
There are some new things I totally don't know among the tabs. I think that's because I'm using the newer version of DM (ver. 1.2.0.77).

I've been trying to create folders as similar as possible to the default to avoid confusion.

1) Download tab.
I made the folders like these. Are they OK?

Package Archive
D:\Users\Public\Documents\DAZ 3D\InstallManager\Downloads

Thumbnail Archive
D:\Users\Public\Documents\DAZ 3D\InstallManager\Thumbnails

2) Installation tab

This is the section I don't know well. Should they be…?

Manifest Archive
D:\Users\Public\Documents\DAZ 3D\InstallManager\ManifestFiles

64-bit Program Base
D:\Program Files

32-bit Program Base
D:\Program Files (x86)

Content Database Base
D:\Users\(my PC name)\AppData\Roaming\DAZ 3D\cms

Content Database Port
17237

I assume I have to change some things in DAZStudio after this, but I'm going to leave it for now as I need to know those things above first.

Don't try making folders with same names as system folders, that is more likely to confuddle things.

The settings you listed will change where DIM puts its own files, where DS will be installed and where the CMS database will be.

They won't change where DIM installs content, for that you would need to add a content path to the list (using the "+" button).

I personally wouldn't change the path to the CMS database unless you really want to move every DS files to D:

As jestmart I would rather use a path like 'D:\DAZ 3D\InstallManager\" instead of "D:\Users\Public\Documents\DAZ 3D\InstallManager\" but that should work too.

And yes, you'll need to change a good number of settings in DS once it's installed.

    In Edit > Preferences > General :

There are 2 additional paths in there for DS temp directories. If you want everything moved to D you need to change those too.

In Edit > Preferences > CMS Settings : Change the path so that it's the same as the "Content Database Base" path in DIM if you moved it.

In Edit > Preferences > Content, click on "content directory manager" and change the various content paths

"Daz Connect data" is where DS will install content if you use Connect. Move it to D: drive if you plan to use that.

And add the "Content Path" you added in DIM to both Daz Studio Formats and Poser Formats

I just recently tried to re-install Daz Studio 4.11 to my 20TB very clean raid array as my C: drive is getting low on space.  Now I'm getting a lot of strange errors and delays in DS when I try to load content.  What is the best method for perfoming a clean uninstall of Daz Studio followed by a new clean install to the D:\  drive?

  • So rather than try to reinstall to a new folder, you might've had better results if you had just moved the contents and put in a junction to redirect.  That's a fancy word for "shortcut".  Just like for files, you can create shortcuts for folders.  The reason that a  junction might be better is because you would have preserved all settings and customizations in your smart content, etc.

But that's neither here nor there right now for you.  I think you may be right and the best option may very well be to uninstall and reinstall.  In this case, that is.

You can just uninstall almost everything through DIM.  Now if you have products that have their own installers (Cararra and Bryce, for example), you'll probably need to uninstall those through Add/Remove programs (or whatever the new name is now).

Then just reinstall manual software first, and then reinstall all your stuff in DIM.

I just did all my DAZ reinstalls on my laptop.  I highly recommend unchecking the option for "delete install files after installation".  That would force you to re-download EVERYTHING to do this in the future.  If there's one thing I've learned, it's that I'll ALWAYS have a future day where I need to re-install stuff.  Waiting for downloads would be a royal pain, and double the pain for anybody with multiple rendering machines.

  • Thank you very much, jestmart, Leana. Especially, Leana, thanks for the detailed information.

Though I tried hard several times, now I am so ashamed to say I gave up this time after all.

I just found out it's still a bit too complicated (for me anyway). I got totally stressed out by some unexpected problems.

Anyway, hopefully I would delete and re-install DS again when I get better idea about the folder structure of DS.

Un-installing DS wont fix content problems as many support folders and files are not removed.  I believe DAZ does this so that when someone updates to a new release it will just work from the go like the old version.

Before restart you may want to set up a directory structure on your D: drive something like the following, then we an help you with setting up DIM

    D:/3D Stuff
        D:/3D Stuff/Apps
            D:/3D Stuff/Apps/32 bit
            D:/3D Stuff/Apps/64 bit
        D:/3D Stuff/Content
            D:/3D Stuff/Content/My Connect Library
            D:/3D Stuff/Content/My DAZ Studio Library
            D:/3D Stuff/Content/My Library

  • I tried this once. It didn't go well, the drive died, and I still can't clean up the mess well enough for Studio so see the content on C:.

I’ve used DS and content with non-default drives and paths since the first betas (yes, I mean before DS1), and never had a problem. But I never moved the temp folders.

Why is the installation/uninstallation of DAZ such a complete mess? Such an easy thing to implement, that thousands of software companies have been doing for decades and this is where DAZ is at. I'm also TRYING to move all DAZ and related software to my D drive after DAZ's install process was exceedingly unclear. Typically you're allowed to change install paths as part of the installation. Not hidden away in multiple settings sections you have to know exist before agreeing to all of the automatic installs. This process is pathetic. After reading over multiple theories on how moving this stuff should work, it still wouldn't for me. So I've decided to uninstall/reinstall. All the way down to the installer itself. Then I manually found and deleted all DAZ folders AND deleted everything from the registry I could. After all of that and reinstalling, I STILL can't get the Content Database Base to be anything other than my AppData/Roaming folder on my C: drive. This is without anything other than the DIM installed at this point. If I change the Content Database Base on either Basic Settings or Advaned Settings>Installations, accept the changes, leave the settings and go right back in, DIM has changed it back to the C drive. I was excited to start with DAZ, but now I don't even think I'm interested. If just properly installing the software where you want it is THIS difficult, I can only imagine I'll run in to all sorts of frustrating illogically implemented features.

Uninstalling/reinstalling won't change settings, deleting the preferences for DIM will just reset them. Using the stand-alone installer for DS would let you specify a location, but part of the point of DIM is to let you set things once and then have them aply to future installations without prompting. You are not the first person to report issues with setting the Content Cluster from within DIM - it does work from DS, but should be possible either way, so I would suggest opening a support ticket for this https://www.daz3d.com/help/help-contact-us

Do note that if you change the location of your Documents folder before first installing DS it will respect that location for the /Daz 3D/Studio/My Library/ and - I think - the Daz Connect data folder, but the My Daz 3d Library folder for DIM installs does have to be moved off the C: driver by direct user action.

To set the ContentCluster location in DS open Edit>Preferences, go to the Content tab, click Content Directory Manager - that gives you the chance to chnage not only the database location but all of the other content locations too - you can then download thiss cript and drag it into the DS window to update DIM to use the new install locations http://docs.daz3d.com/doku.php/public/software/dazstudio/4/referenceguide/scripting/api_reference/samples/file_io/install_manager_config/start

  • Newbie here. It's almost impossible to change the CMS from loading onto the 'C' drive. My 'C' drive is a small SSD only used for Windows Operating System, while everything else automatically goes to my larger drives. Everything, that is, apart from Daz Content Database. I even have my Storage sorted on my System that automatically puts things into their respective drives. Daz doesn't care about that. Daz wants the Content Database on the C drive, and so onto the C drive it shall go no matter what a user wants. To say I'm frustrated is an understatement. The way things are going? I'll need to fork out for a bigger SSD because of this issue.
