Yeah, though I have to admit that I fell into the uncannny valley of 3D with that puppet show.
Don't get me wrong, the puppets are stunning, and operated great, and the sets are beautiful... but I was always stumbling over their way of moving. And I grew up on Hanson stuff like Muppets, and dearly loved them. Just that my viewing habits have been influenced by all that 3D animation that puppettering kind of falls short on the last few inches of it.
I guess I'll have to watch a few more episodes to get back into the recognation patterns of puppet animation, and then rewatch the entire thing to fully enjoy it.
It is a nice series, and - no spoilers here - it looks like it's set up for at least one more season to come. I actually prefer the look of the characters in the original movie, but that is just personal taste.
Considering the technical limitations the series does answer a lot of questions left from the movie (which I watched when it first came out in theatres, as well as now, on Netflix) For me, it holds happy associations from my past life . If you liked the original, this is a must see series.
I love the Dark Crystal Age of Resistance, Ive watched 3 episodes so far, I'm hoping to do some binge watching this evening , I also loved the original movie though I bought it on vhs tape years ago. I still have the video tape just no player to play it on..lol
but the designs and detail put into the characters and the world! oh my....! this is beautiful...
The craftsmanship and imagination of this production is nothing short of excellent! Overall a good show and worth watching, especially if you are a fan of the original movie.

I didn't love the first episode, because it had some atrociously clumsy world-building and poor dialogue. I'm now six episodes in, and enjoy it quite a bit more now, although I still feel like the writing can be a bit too kiddie at times. Yes, I know that it could be considered a kids' show, and that the original was technically a kids' movie, but it was more along the lines of the Secret of Nimh or Watership Down, a "how the hell did parents think it was okay to show this to kids" kids' movie. The worldbuilding is pretty great, though, and it has strong, relatable characters. The biggest problem I have with it, however, is how stiffly the puppets move. It looks just like the original movie, and I can understand the appeal of that, but it's not as if that movie was pushing the absolute limits of what it was possible to do with puppets.
I fell asleep within the first fifteen minutes... but it was like past 1 AM, so that was on me...
I was wishing they would make the Gelfling look a little less puppetish... the original Gelfling didn’t have much facial expression and seemed very Kermit the Frog-like with their head movement. But it was okay, the original story worked.... in general it looks exactly like the original, so I guess that’s fine... hopefully I’ll not fall asleep again while watching (I only get to watch late at night when I’m already tired).
I was very ... thrown by how the basic plot of the Skeksis was totally rewritten. I mean, the show’s appeal is to return to the story of the Dark Crystal... tossing out the actual plot seems a bit dumb.
Also I’m finding it really hard to get into the very stiff rubber puppet faces. Given we’ve seen animation like Kubo and the Two Strings (granted, stop motion)...
It’s an amazing achievement and I hate to be a downer but not feeling it.
I watched a few minutes and also couldn't get ino the expressionless faces. I appreciate the effort of getting by without CG characters though, so I'm a bit torn.
I admit I was a bit surprised they kept to the puppets from the movie and didn't go CG at all. I'm sure that "purists" would have complained, but I feel like something is missing in today's world when the characters don't show very much emotion. It's distracting enough that I'm having a hard time getting into it.
And I'm one of the few around here that loved the Carnival Row series and wasn't distracted at all by some of the things that bothered others a great deal.
3: There writing for the story/scripts is quite bad. A step above "Daniel Tigers Neighborhood", but a whole floor below "Power Rangers".
The original story...
The land was lush, the world was great. Then, the crystal cracked and TWO NEW RACES WERE BORN. They were the same beings, one was the good and the other was the evil sides of the same being. The Skexsies were young, and many, in the beginning, as were the other creatures, which, at that time, walked upright. Then, as they aged, the powers from the crystal were not enough. They wanted to reduce aging as well as just "living" off the powers of the crystal. So they started using the crystal to drain the essence from the Gelflings. That restored the "youthfulness", and the crystal is still where they got the "power to live". When a Skexsies died, so did the other half of the being, the good versions of them. (I forgot what they were called. The hunched-over beings that helped the Gelflings and came at the end, to join back with the Skexies, when the shard was returned to heal the crystal.)
They originally killed ALL the Gelflings, because of the prophecy... That a Gelfling would end the reign of the Skexsies.
Now, they are showing the past, but it's not the past that was told in the movie. The present Skixsies are all old, like they were at the end of the movie, and there is only like 8 of them. In the past, when there were Gelflings, there were dozens of Skixsies and they were not "entrusted to guard the crystal", and they didn't build the star mobile thing for whatever that other creatures name is... She was just a nut-job who found a shard, along with dozens of other shards, and was obsessed with prophecies.
I am still watching it, but I have to treat it as a new whole story. Because it has already decimated the original story, beyond repair.

I couldn't get past the first episode. As BeeMKay noted above the gelflings have me fall into the uncanny valley, or rather, the 'you could have done better, if you can make me forget Kermit is only a sock' valley. And the story. And some concepts (while beautifully done, the ideas are meh).
Having finished the series now, I’m not going to say they tied everything together perfectly, but they're connected much better than you two think right now. Give it time.
well I finished the series.. and i liked it. I thought it fell close to most muppet - puppet type movies, & I actually went into watching this movie figuring they would be puppets like the original muppets which i actually like , so I was not disappointed with the use to puppets or the stop motion .
According to netfix the story was suppose to be a prequel to the original movie so I was a little confused at the connection at first but understood it better as it went on, that may be come more clear with future episodes I have a better understanding on how Aughra played a role allowing the skexisis take over & with how they portrayed the Skexsies at the end was not what I expected either so hopefully that will be more in depth in season2
The scenery was excellent and the actions scenes were definitely lacking in suspense. But i think season 1 is more a build up of the story like game of thrones did in season1
To me it was a fun series if you like muppet's, But like said i was expecting to to be more sesame street than star wars too.& I like the muppet's & still like to watch sesame street & fraggle rock with my grand kids so what heck do I know. I guess everybody has different taste in film
My wife LOVED the original movie. She couldn't watch more than ten minutes of this last night before asking me to please find something else. I was surprised, but find something else to watch we did. It doesn't bother me if others liked it, I have always LOVED The Muppet Show, but just couldn't get into this new Dark Crystal reboot. <shrug>

..as we have seen with other "prequels" like the Phantom Menace, they ruined the mystique and mythos of the world setting (the Force was just there it permeated around everything, and you either tapped into it or didn't, nothing about those ridiculous midichlorians).
Just rewatched the movie tonight, and I still argue that the show fits with the story of the movie, if not perfectly, far better than a lot of you are thinking. I had a really bad feeling after the first episode, too, but give it some time.
The original movie said the Urskeks got shattered by getting too arrogant and abusing the crystal, and there used to be more of them.
I can’t see how that could possibly be consistent with the prequel unless the narrator of the prequel was just... wrong, or there’s time travel or parallel universes or something, none of which makes sense given the story and setting.
Or I suppose the Urskeks at the end of the movie could have been lying, but again that doesn’t really fit.
I'm 4 or 5 episodes in, and don't see any major conflicts with the movie.
Treat "1000 years" as a round number in this one, and an exact number in the movie. Let's say... 980 years ago the Urskeks split up. There was lots of Skeksis, who set things up more-or-less as they are here - a feudal system of Gelflings supporting them. They make the observatory to get Augra out of the way, so she doesn't look too much into where they came from (this part's something of a stretch). Fast forward to the series, and the crystal's tapped out so they look into extra fuels for it, and stuff starts happening/changing.
By the end of the series, I'm guessing there will be a massive purge of the Gelflings, and everybody dies aside from a few hidden. Then give them some time to grow up (and ruins to get overgrown), then the movie.
I think one thing to keep in mind about the story is that it appears that the story is being told by the Skeksis. It's in their best interest to lie about the origin of things so that they can keep their control. The narrator could easily have been repeating that misinformation to stay consistent with how the Gelflings believe the world works. Otherwise it would be REALLY confusing if the narrator had told a different story to what everyone in the world of the series says/thinks is true.
Any recomendations for recreating gelfling outfits in DAZ? The characters... Thorn's models are a good start, with more of a muzzle and a 4-digit hand morph. I should be able to handle that. But the outfits are a bit... less flamboyant than typical DAZ fantasy offerings. But still more than the basic tunics.
The Skeksis - that's a giant task I don't feel up to trying.
Based on some feedback from a friend, I'm giving it another try. The story is feeling better in the episodes after the first; so I'll keep watching. There's even some hints that the skeksis have been lying about the history of the world; so I'm not as jarred by the deviation from the movie's storyline.

Cheers for the heads up. Got the flyer from Netflix and thought it was for the movie.
Should've read the fine print. On the watch list it goes.

Wow, a very nice image, though it seems a little dark on my monitors.

Well, these are my opinions on the new show... (I was a BIG fan of the movie, though it was not perfect.)
1: They destroyed the original story, from the movie.
2: Something is "off" on the characters. They just look odd now. https://darkcrystal.fandom.com/wiki/Kira
3: There writing for the story/scripts is quite bad. A step above "Daniel Tigers Neighborhood", but a whole floor below "Power Rangers".

Yeah, that's the thing that bugged me.
I mean, they did puppets much like the original puppets. Because it's a callback and rebirth of the original, ok.
They totally redid the actual story so it's not really connected to the original. ... What?
I mean, either both should be connected or do something very different 'inspired by' Dark Crystal. Or something.
I hate sounding like one of those grumps, but... grump.
I couldn't get past the first episode. As BeeMKay noted above the gelflings have me fall into the uncanny valley, or rather, the 'you could have done better, if you can make me forget Kermit is only a sock' valley. And the story. And some concepts (while beautifully done, the ideas are meh).

Rotten tomatos gave it a great score too https://www.rottentomatoes.com/tv/the_dark_crystal_age_of_resistance/s01

seriously. once you get to the end, you'll see there isn't any... it all falls into place..
