How to fit an item on a custom figure?

I created a custom figure (hair in this case) not to be used with any Genesis figure meaning I did not use the Transfer Utility feature. It was created using Figure Setup.

I wanted to test out if I can fit clothes (or other items) on top of my custom figure so I basically duplicated the custom figure and hit "Fit To:" my original custom figure. And then everything exploded. Please see images for references.

What step am I missing?
