Graded Dirt Construction Lot

I am trying to set up a scene involving, essentially a mansion, in construction on a graded dirt lot, but having trouble seeing how to do the graded land itself. A concrete foundation and wood framing is the easy part - can do it with primitives and shaders, or there's even a few existing products out there I could use. Anyone have any suggestions?

I see there are plenty of dirt shaders I could use but I need geometry to apply to it.

You could try adding a hires plane and then shape it with deformers. I do this all the time for sand dunes and small hills.

I'm not sure exactly how you wnt it shaped. Could you use something like this: https://www.renderosity.com/mod/bcs/basic-terrain-poser/126869

  • Thanks guys! The deformed primitive is pretty good. I created one the size of the default ground plane (40m x 40m) with 169 divisions, then SubD'ed it, which would probably do the trick! But that Poser product is appealing too - the first shape is pretty close to what I need if I scale it up. But then I just realized I need an underground garage to go under it, so now I'm building that first... yes I'm very good at creating work for myself!  frown

There is a product called Easy Roads 3D in the Unity Asset Store that costs money but that would be your best bet as a non-3D modeler. You make your plot of land and then use Easy Roads 3D to do all those 'man-made construction' type changes to it. It can also make rivers & such. You then export the finished work as a FBX, a Wavefront OBJ, or whatever your prefered format is. There are both free FBX and OBJ  exporters in the Unity Asset Store. I think there is also a free DAE format exporter.

The paid version of Easy Roads 3D Pro is $45 while the free version of Easy Roads 3D Free is $0. There is also a free demo project product by the author.

Just wanted to say that mCasual has a script to use a grayscale image to deform a plane primative to create some basic terrain shapes. With a dirt shader it would also give you control over how large the leveled part is compared to the portion of the site that hasn't been prepared.
