Is there a way for a combined geoshell of character and clothes?

All these nice blood and dirt layers for various characters have one profound weakness. They leave the clothing unblemished. And even if I manipulate the dress as well, the bloodstains don't match.  Is there a way to make a geoshell for both character and clothing (and weapons or other items) in one piece, to make dirt and blood splatters more realistic?

I think geoshells only work on figures or objects, not groups.  You could create a combined OBJ and make the geoshell on that i guess.

You can create the a geoshell for the dress, and then apply the same blood stained shader onto it. If the blood shader is not tileless, then it will require some work manipulating the vertical and horizontal offsets to get it to look ok.

In practice, no. Geoshells rely on the UVs of each model, so unless the clothing UVs match the character's texture layout (which could be done, but would usually be very very tedious), this isn't possible.

What you need to use is Decals rather than Geoshells, as Decals are projected onto the surface and are thus entirely UV independent. With decals you should be able to project matching splatters onto both clothing and figure.

  • Yes, you sort of can. It won't be perfect, but create a second geoshell on the figure and increase the offset until it's above the clothing. It will work best for form fitting clothing. If there are a lot of wrinkles on the dress, it won't work well in those spots.

In theory you are correct. However you can put seamless textures on clothing with a non-seamless UV, and they will normally look fine. Adding something like a texture designed for a torso would not work at all for the base texture, but as an overlay on a geoshell for something like blood smears it might work, and at least they are consistent with the body smears (although there is no reason to assume blood stains on clothing should look the same as those on skin).

However, as you said, decals are a better way to achieve this, and give you more control.

    So decals it is, thanks.
