Can't Use Photoreal for Facial Expressions?
in The Commons
I'm running dual 2080 TIs and I'm not sure if I'm missing something or the performance I'm seeing is the best of what's currently available. Using Photoreal settings, I can pose character's bodies quite easily. However, when it comes to facial expressions, any adjustment is essentially impossible to see in real time, as the face becomes pixelated. In an ideal world, the face would simply turn "white" (I don't recall what that surface is called, as it moves in real time) and I would be able to see the changes. Unfortunately, only on the face, when I make adjustments like that, it's so laggy I can't see any changes I'm making.
What, oh what, am I missing? I'm losing my mind, here

Use a different preview mode - Iray has to converge more to bring out finer details, the noise from incomplete convergence is what you are seeing as pixellation. If you do use one of the other modes you will may need to up the basic Subdivision level (not the render SubD level) if HD morphs are used.
As an old-school (former) Poser user, I do all my work in texture-shaded preview mode as it's faster and I have a pretty good idea what it's going to translate to when I do the final render. I don't use any Iray rendering until I'm working on lights and DOF.
