Need help building a rig for rendering. $700~ budget.

Before anyone says that $700 isn't enough, I already have x2 GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER 8 GB. I already know having decent gpus is a must if I don't want to wait 20 min+ for a scene to finish rendering but not sure about how important cpus or ram is. I'm only planning to use this rig solely for daz3d rendering with octane and nothing else

So, how much ram you guys recommend? Would 16 gb+ be necessary or make any large difference?

What's the best type of cpu just for rendering?

Any help will be appreciated.

  • IF you are running 2 gpu's you need 32gb of ram and if you render Iray use HDRI for lighting. Also you don't need to keep rendering if you stop after 2mins and use free Intel denoiser you can cleanup fireflies in render and it is ready for use. McCasual has a script for running intel denoiser from inside daz studio.

  • If I had to choose, yea, a decent amount of RAM will help in general.  Then look at what sort of CPU you can get that have a decent single core speed (for general use) and whatever your budget will allow core-count wise.

I don't know specifics/budget, but PC part picker might be a good place to look.

  • Okay, I'm going to go with 32gb of ram. For cpu would a $60 Ryzen 3 1200 3.1 GHz Quad be efficient enough for daz studio? I know it's probably a weak cpu but only going to be using rig for rendering and nothing else.

Be carefull about the motherboard if you want to use NVlink with your cards. There's nothing clear about minimal spec but I'd make sure to buy a motherboard that is SLI certified. It ensure that it has at least two PCIe 3.0 that can run at 8x/8x. (some people say it requires two slots running at x16)

32 GB is only required if you get NVlink to work. Otherwise minimal is 16GB ( I always advise RAM = 2-3x VRAM). It depends on the software chain and if you multitask

Ex : if you use octane from DS, Datas will be loaded in DS, and then also in the Octane render plugin, and you can have some software overhead. If you want to fill up your GPU Vram, you'll then need 2,xx time your VRAM

CPU is not much important for offline rendering. It can become important in particular tasks where you want a fast feedback

If you already have the GPUs, then staying under $700 should be easy with Ryzen. I'd go with 32GB of RAM. The price of RAM is nearing historic lows, so its easier than ever to get now. I have managed to create scenes that used about 30GB of RAM while using 9GB of VRAM on a 1080ti, so I think 32 would be a sweet spot, not too little, not too much. You can always add more RAM later if you need it. The prices of 1st and 2nd generation Ryzens are crazy cheap after the release of the latest series, too. There have been some amazing deals on very good CPUs for $200 with 8 cores and 16 threads. Deals can change frequently, so its hard to just come out and suggest one in particular. Shop around, maybe keep an eye on websites that post tech deals.

I"ll echo what others have said, getting 32Gb RAM would be the best option. Octane is much more efficient about RAM usage than Iray, but there will still be some overhead. Also keep in mind that with the out of core memory capabilities of Occtane you will be able to use system RAM for rendering if your scene exceeds GPU RAM capacity, so the additional RAM will ensure you have enough to handle larger scenes.
