How do I get the view options to show in the work area?
I am using the City workspace. Before I chose this option, I had a little icon next to the drop down for the camera views. I noticed that the icon was missing when I wanted to switch to iray preview. I found that I can get to the icon if I dock the view options. But that puts the bar at the top of the window and I have to keep it docked if I want to see the icon and use iray preview. Isn't there a way to just have the icon show all the time like it use to?

I assume you mean City Limits, or City Limits Lite. Regardless, it should be the same for all the layouts.
The little icon you're referring to is a dropdown for the Draw Mode settings. It uses the Foreground Color, which is probably white. If your viewport background color is also white, it will still be there but you won't be able to see it.
One thing you can do is change the viewport background color. (You can also change the foreground color, but it affects all your text and can make it unreadable.)
Can you see the icon now?
Repeat the above as many times as you need to get a background color you like and that allows you to see the icons.
The keyboard shortcuts don't display in this drop-down, but you can change from one to another holding down the Ctrl key and and then a number. For example, Texture Shaded is Ctrl+9, and Nvidia Iray is Ctrl+0 by default.
I hope this helps.
Thank you, L'Adair! You taught me a few things I didn't know.
I was using City Limits. And my background is a darker gray, so I wasn't sure why I wasn't seeing the dropdown. So I opened my scene so I could at least try the short cuts you mentioned. And then I saw what the problem was. I was using an almost white paper roll as a back drop. So the drop down was there, I just couldn't see it.
I was always using the default layout until a few days ago. My workspace was a darker gray. I had been that what since Daz moved to that format. I had add some panels that I often used which weren't part of the original layout. And then one day I opened DS and my viewport was white. I wanted it to be gray but I couldn't figure out how to fix it, so I tried to reload the default and that's how I came to use City Limits. Maybe that's what I always had but I don't recall the icons on the left and right borders.
Thanks for your help!
City Limits Lite is similar to City Limits, but without the icon bars on either side. I've recently started using City Limits. It was a royal pain to switch over after years of City Limits Lite and customizations, but I'm glad I did. I recommend you stay with City Limits, and just ignore icons you don't recognize. You'll know them soon enough, and it's really convenient.
There are products, older ones I believe, that change the viewport background. Don't ask me why. As far as I can tell, it only serves to irritate. But there may have been a technical reason why these products needed to change it, back when they were new products. And now you know how to fix your viewport if it changes on you again.
You're welcome, and I'm glad I was able to help.
there are preferences to control whether or not you want to save/load background colors to/from scene files
