Hair models for Iray which render fast?

Hey guys and lads, I finally switched over to a new workstation (proud owner of GTX 1080ti), so now I'm trying out Iray for a change. My first thought about Iray is:

are there any particular hair models which render faster than others? I noticed that at 60% convergence some of my renders are essentially done, but the hair is far, far from done :) I remember this issue back in 3delight - some hair models were very well done and rendered extremely fast, as opposed to some other models which sometimes completely clogged up the render time.

Any suggestions? I'm not looking for anything too specific, it might be long hair, short, afro, braids etc... I'm rendering with mesh lights + hdr if thats's of any importance.

In 3DL, transmapped hair with raytracing turned on was a clock killer. Iray always has raytracing turned on, so there's that. I like polygonal hair, though it can look a bit coarse. For the Afro hair styles, it works well. Neftis made some of those. In general, I like shorter hair styles that render fast. I also don't have to fiddle with the ends of the long hair poking through things.

Hahah good point about the poking. I don't mind if the hair is a bit "boxy" with less poly count, I don't need any glam-amazing-realistic effect. And besides I noticed that even short hair can render really long, so the "volume" doesn't matter I guess.

I think it's more about how many layers the hair has. A long hair set may have three or more layers, less for short hair.
