Cloning Categories Across Figures?

I am currently migrating my poses across all figures. Do I need to manually duplicate my customer categories for each figure, or is there some way to automagically clone the categories -- as the Figures/Foo/Foo.duf paths would mostly be the same, minus the figure name portion of the paths Any way to do that?

I don't think so - but why are you putting the figure name in? If you want to filter you can use compatibility for that, and the categories can be catch-all.

I'm not sure I understand what you said, there. Are you saying there's a way to duplicate/apply Categories to content/poses across multiple figure generations using "comparability"? That sounds like what I'm after, but what/where is it? I converted poses from V4 to G2, G3, G8. I don't want to have to manually categorize the same nearly identical content 4x... What's the best way to add something like Sitting to V4 specific pose, and then mirror that categorization to the G2, G3, G8 converted poses?

No, I'm saying if you set the compatibility for the pose to the figure they match then Smart Content will - with Filter By Context on - show only the poses for the selected figure, even if there are poses for a different figure in the same category.

I get your meaning Richard, and it would make some things easier. But if the OP is anything like me, one of the reasons I use Categories is because I have too much older (or freebie) content that doesn't have good metadata and I'm afraid it would get filtered out if I just used Smart Content. So I will have "\G8F\Wardrobe\Boots" and "\G3F\Wardrobe\Boots". Depending on how well the RSY converters worked, some boots may be listed in both categories, but at least I will feel more confident that when I look at \G8F\Wardrobe\Boots I am truly seeing all the boots my GF8 based character can wear.

It would be nice if there was a way to use some database queries or scripts to setup the category tree. I haven't looked at the scripting SDK to see if that would be possible or not.

If you are categorising anyway why not set the compatibility? (I admit is isn't usually done in the same way, though you can use the Edit Metadata dialogue for both, but it's possible to handle it with a fairly smooth workflow.)

You're right it could be. In my case, I'm rebuilding my categories after a loss of my CMS DB in a HD failure. 4 years ago. It's taken me that long to get up the nerve to start again. :) with almost 5300 DIM installed packages (with who knows how many individual total items), even 3 extra clicks seems like extra work. ;)

I should probably try taking a look at the script SDK, but I'm not sure metadata manipulation will be there.

It is,though I can't recall how much diect manipulation it allows; indeed it might be possible to use a script to copy across a category hierarchy (but I don't think there's a suitable script already in existance).
