Whqat do you artists use to pint textures on? Specifically over seams.

Depends if the seams are between tiles in a UDIM layout, or just multiple islands or left/right on the same map (ie a Daz figure's center seam down the back).

Substance Painter can handle the latter, but you'll need something like Mudbox or Mari for the former. I think 3DCoat may be able to handle UDIM as well.

  • Blender texture painting.  Doesn't support UDIM as such but will paint across seams nonetheless.

    Zbrush

needs UDIM or not overlapping UV’s

can paint on the overlapping UVs but need to mask and hide surfaces to export maps find that a pain myself

    sometimes use Carrara

which does overlapping UVs as separate maps at once as well as UDIM but is not as accurate as Zbrush but you do get pretty instant feedback on your actual multiple maps

     Sculptris can too with limitations

you need your mesh triangulated and AFAIK not UDIM and not overlapping UV’s

I use Blacksmith 3D (at Renderosity). It's relatively simple to use. Blender is probably the best free option, with the 2.8 Beta being the easiest version to learn/use IMHO.

    Mudbox

Just to point out that you can get Mudbox from Autodesk for $10 / month. Might be worth a 1 month trial to see if it works for you?

I use Mudbox. I keep hoping to roll that functionality into another app but none of the others quite do it.

    whats udim?

aside from that, 3d coat is really awesome for painting too

    whats udim?

Using a unit offset along the U axis to separate materials - the way the daz humans have used a separate group of textures, each taking the whole of the unit square, but by giving them an offset an aplication that is UDIM-aware can automatically separate the groups for painting (instead of having a strok affect all the maps which use the same fractional values).

aside from that, 3d coat is really awesome for painting too
