Problem with DS 4.11

WonderlandWonderland Posts: 7,137

DS 4.11 is not working at all! I have a 1080ti and I’ve been waiting for 15 minutes for just a headshot to show up on screen in IRay. In 4.10, it would render immediately. I definitely will be going back to the previous version. How is anyone using this? Also all the icons for the tools on the top have disappeared. It’s now going on 20 minutes and still nothing is visible in the viewport, everything is still grey. I’ve never seen this before. About to give up and switch back. Is there a special trick to get this version to render on screen in the viewport?

I just clicked Render to see if it would actually render and it is rendering in a separate window BEHIND the workspace and won’t let me move it to the front! So I just moved the main workspace and now see the render is completely black!

The Beta was working but glitchy, this pro version doesn’t work at all!

Windows 10 just updated, I’m hoping that is not the problem. Anyone know what the problem could be? I don’t know the exact specs (I am Mac person except for this computer) but it’s a high end gaming computer, NVIDIA 1080ti, works great with any game on the Oculus Rift...

Wait, 4.10 doesn’t work anymore! How do I get it to work? It says DZ core.dll is missing...

If it's any comfort, I also have a 1080ti and 4.11 works fine.

I assume you've got your drivers up to date...

Did you upgrade your Nvidia drivers to the latest one? From the Nvidia website? Also unless you've saved the installers for 4.10 once you update to 4.11 there is no going back.

I have the actual app for 4.10 but it won’t open. The only downloads I have are for 32 bit, the 64 bit is gone. I will try updating the drivers but hope that doesn’t screw up my Oculus... I liked 4.10 better! Even if I get this to work, I want 4.10 back, it was sooo much faster than the beta which drove me crazy!

You can't run both. You can't have both production versions installed. You can have a production and a Beta, but 4.10 and 4.11 will not play nicely together, AFAIK. This is why you always save the main installer at every release. If you're lucky, updating the driver will fix it. I had a problem last year where Iray simply failed with an error. No amount of updating, backdating, uninstalling and reinstalling fixed it until I broke down and reinstalled Windows!

Well, updating the drivers helped, it renders now, but much slower than 4.10 and is glitchy. I’d be happy to delete 4.11 if tech support would give me 4.10 back.

Also, although my custom UI is there, all the tool icons at the top disappeared. How do I get them back?

Just sent an earlier version request to tech support. It is still rendering behind the workspace with no way to bring it to the front, my tools at the top are gone and it’s so sloooow. I’ll take the speed of 4.10 over this any time! I can use the beta if I need the new hair thing. Otherwise, I don’t see any improvements...

I reverted back to 4.10 because Iray Draw mode in 4.11 is heavily slowed down if you use a backdrop image. In 4.10 it renders equally fast both with or without a backdrop.

Ok, finally got my tools back but it’s just too slow for me. 4.10 rendered MUCH faster for me. Hoping tech support will give me back previous version.

I’m just using a HDRI and it’s so slooooow in comparison!

When I had problems with 4.11, I had to restore my computer to an earlier time before I upgraded to 4.11 and it brought 4.10 back.  Hopefully, that will also work for you.

That's not true, strictly speaking, but you do do have to jump through some hoops to get more than one installed on your computer.

Here's the how to, from @JOdel, (found here):

Pfffft. You can have as many different release versions as you want. But you need to do the driving yourself.

The new version will only overwrite the old one if the old one is where the installer wants to put the new one.

Mind you, I install everything manually so if I mess something up, I know who to blame. But in this case, once I figured it out it was pretty simple. Note: I'm on a Mac, so things may be named differently in Windows or other OSes.

Make sure that your old version is in a folder that says what version it is. Drag the old version's program folder out of the Application folder, and put it in the Trash. Don't uninstall it. Just drag the whole folder into the Trash, and don't empty the Trash. The Trash is a shielded folder, installers can't find anything in there to mess with it.

Install the new version. Label the folder with a name that says what version it is.

Open the Trash, and drag the old version's program folder out and put it back in the Applications folder. Voila! Two different release versions.

On a Mac, put the icons in the Dock to launch them. It's up to you to remember which is which because they look just alike. I'm assuming that Windows has some kind of equivalent arrangement to the Dock.

You may or may not need to redirect the content manager to where your content lives. I found tht the new copy of 4.11 had copied the settings of where my content libraries are from the information in my user's files.

Eventually I'm going to need to reninstall my 3rd-party plugins, but I'll wait on that until any necessary updates have been posted. After all, I still have those installed in my copy of 4.10.

I used the instructions and now have both 4.9 and 4.10 release versions installed on The Beast, along with the beta for 4.11. The two released versions share the appData, so any changes you make in one are also in the other, but it seems to be working just fine.

The new Iray engine is much bigger and beefier than the older one in 4.10. It also processes more information per iteration than the old engine did. Basically, render to 10 samples with either version of DS, and the image rendered in 4.11, while taking longer, should also be clearer. Theoretically, based on what I heard about the two render engines.

You can use the Denoiser with the Iray draw mode and see clearer results faster. It's really good for seeing how your lighting is affecting the image. Details will get lost, though, at low sample rates. I've tested rendering with and without the denoiser on, and with a high number of samples, 5K or more, I'm not seeing a difference. So I only turn the Denoiser on when for the viewport, and even then, only when I need to see how my lighting is really affecting the scene.

I hope TS will get you back to 4.10, but I think it's more likely they will work with you to get 4.11 working optimally for your computer.

Timing is everything? My old computer was crashing on me so I paid up for a nice upgrade which coincided with 4.11. I am in heaven with the speed renders are taking now. I had trouble installing Daz because I didn't want to use the defaults and I made mistakes with the configurations. One thing I learned is even though you may uninstall everything, the registry still retains miscellaneous settings and they perpetuate when reinstalling. Since the computer is new I reset to factory settings and started from scratch. So the point of this is the Daz software doesn't play nice with the registry if you need to install/uninstall. Not very helpful when I can't offer a solution.

On Windows, having two versions of the same thing trying to save their own settings may cause issues. Anything that can save into the registry, or %AppData% is at risk. Yes, maybe doable, but I have seen before that it's not recommended. I do have DS3 still around, but that's a completely different generation of software. As always, download and save the installers! And since JOdel is on a MAC, things are different.
