Daz Studio 4.11 not rendering with GPU.

Rather than going through the pain of troubleshooting, can I roll back to 4.10?

I have the same problem after the DS 11 release:

     - Got the latest Windows 10 update

     - Then went back to load the most recent NVIDIA drivers (430.86) - which I dowloaded directly from NVIDIA

     - I have GeForce GTX 850M checked in both sections under the Render Advanced tab

     - I even went back into the NVIDIA control panel and tried both preferred graphics processor settings (Automatic and High Perfromance NVIDIA processor)

But DS 11 doesn't use my GeForce GTX 850M at all.  I see other programs using that processor (to very small degrees) so it seems to be working, but DS 11 won't touch it.

  • Are you sure it is not rendering with GPU? If you are relying on Windows Task Manager it is likely, by default, to give an incorrect impression.

Fair question.  What's a better way of checking what it is actually using?

Edit to add:  I'm using WDDM 2.0, which I thought dipslays GPU usage correctly.  And my Performance tab in Task Manager shows separate entries for CPU (100% usage) and GPU 1 (NVIDIA GeForce GTX 850M - 0%)

    I checked the error log:

2019-06-20 21:31:44.684 WARNING: ..\..\..\..\..\src\pluginsource\DzIrayRender\dzneuraymgr.cpp(302): Iray ERROR - module:category(IRAY:RENDER):   1.0   IRAY   rend error: Cannot render: found no usable devices.
2019-06-20 21:31:44.685 Iray Render error: Invalid parameters (NULL pointer)

And yes the Task Manager showed no load to the GPU memory. However, I updated the NVidia drivers to 4.3x and it seems to work fine now.

  • Fair question.  What's a better way of checking what it is actually using?

If the CPU is at 100% that does sound as if it is not using the GPU.

I tried a render with a simple sphere and again it failed to use the GPU.  Checking the error log (and omitting a ton of detail) I repeatedly get the following errors relating to CUDA device 0 (GeForce GTX 850M):

     - out of memory (while allocating memory)

     - Failed to allocate 45.9375 MiB

     - May not have enough memory available to execute CUDA kernal (estimated 45.9375 MiB)

After several repetitions of that concerning varying memory requirements, it then shows:

     - Failed to allocate device memory, falling back to CPU

Any idea would be greatly appreciated!

Are Maxwell cards still supported in this version of iRay?

Not rendering after installed the new version 4.11. It doesn't show the progress window when click render.

Are you using GPU or CPU (or both)? Which GPU? Which driver?

I use a GTX 1080 TI and it is not using the GPU either. On an AMD 9370E processor, 16 gigs of memory running Window 7 Pro SP 1. Worked fine with 4.10 but now not working.

Task Manager show CPU usage across eight cores running 45 and 100 percent. Ten min into render of plain sphere on black background and still not done.

Advanted tab shows both settings set to use the graphics card.

    This is not acceptable performance.

And which nVidia driver are you using? In any event, if it wasn't using the GPU (or was using both GPU and CPU) I would expect near 100% continuous CPU usage, not varying between 445% and 100% - please check the end of the log file after rendering (Help>Troubleshooting>View Log File) to see exactly what the render used.

Driver is newest one available 430.86 download and installed direct from the nvidia website.

AMD processors shift between cores, hence the non 100%.

Not sure how to read the log file, like thousands of lines, so what am I looking for?

    Did find this though:

    Dose that help?

    @BronzeDragon

Studio version 4.11 requires a minimum Nvidia driver version of 418.81. You need to get the driver from Nvidia, not from Microsoft.

I have the newest driver, direct from nvidia, 430.86. And I never get drivers from Microsoft, I always get them from the manfacture's site if they are available that way.

I'm having the same issue.  While rendering with an RTX2070 and two GTX960's.

Mid render it will cut out and drop to CPU rendering.

My current configuration is most the current flashed Bios, i7 2700k processor, 32Gb, Windows 10 version 1903, latest Studio. RTX 2070 and two GTX960's...now the problem.  I've trouble shooted a number of combinations of one card, two cards, all three cards while dealiing with the driver issues and system roll backs from Windows (1903 to 1803 and back again) and tried Nvidia's downgrading and upgrading from 417 to 419 or 430 (USE THE STUDIO VERSION not the gamer edition! RTX2070 and GTX960's conflict and the 960's are shut off for some strange reason...totally differnt issue but resolved. Also ensure the onboard Integrated video is disabled in the bios.)

It doesn't really matter what the version of Nvidia is used  at this point. Start of render, mid render, it doesn't matter.

The only temp work around is to save the scene, shut Studio down then load it all with a freshly loaded scene and click render, and pray that at some point the render doesn't drop to CPU.

I've unchecked Opti'  I've checked all the boxes but CPU for rendering and it still drops.

This was a minor inconvience with the beta of 4.11 but now that studio is full released, the problem occures more often. Test render in the work scene are not immune either, watch the little update in the corner of the screen as the scene is set up...it may say CPU rendering only, not to mention GPU monitors show all the cards at 0 or 1% (Most likely due to Windows using it but the CPU usage is at 100%.

Something has happened to Iray in the lastest versions and needs or should be reavaluated.

side note of humor. :-)  3delight still works fine.  :-)

Those errors seem to say that DS couldn't find the folders. Do those folders exist where DS is looking for them?

Not sure, that's an odd error - it looks as if Iray is unable to add some directories which might prevent it from rendering, but if so I'd expect a total failure not just a failure to use the GPU. The very end of the render information in the log (which should be about the last line or so if you open immediately after rendering) whould tell you how many iterations each device performed - that's what I was interested in.

  • Is DS telling you it's using CPU? I just tried a quick render and studio reported using my GTX1070. DS updated just a couple hours ago, not sure if the bug was already fixed by the time I got it, but not having any issues.

Those errors seem to say that DS couldn't find the folders. Do those folders exist where DS is looking for them?

No they do not. Don't know why it would be looking in those locations. The program was loaded to, and set to run, on the "j' drive.

  • Is DS telling you it's using CPU? I just tried a quick render and studio reported using my GTX1070. DS updated just a couple hours ago, not sure if the bug was already fixed by the time I got it, but not having any issues.

The most important bit will be at the end, but

    2019-06-21 12:42:50.892 Iray INFO - module:category(IRAY:RENDER):   1.2   IRAY   rend info : CUDA device 0 (GeForce GTX 1070): Scene processed in 3.675s

shows it is starting off in the GPU not the CPU.

  •

Not sure, that's an odd error - it looks as if Iray is unable to add some directories which might prevent it from rendering, but if so I'd expect a total failure not just a failure to use the GPU. The very end of the render information in the log (which should be about the last line or so if you open immediately after rendering) whould tell you how many iterations each device performed - that's what I was interested in.

This was at the bottom of the:

OK, that is indeed using the CPU fallback after failing to use the GPU. Have you checked that the driver is still the correct version, and hasn't been repalced by a silent "update"? Though i still think there's somethign else, other than driver issues, going on in this case.

No they do not. Don't know why it would be looking in those locations. The program was loaded to, and set to run, on the "j' drive.

It's not DS. It's looking for your assets in E:/my library/data/!MDL

It's looking for something, likely the CUDA DLL in F:/ProgramData/NVIDIA Corporation

    And shaders, I think, in C:/Users/Jeff/AppData/Roaming/DAZ 3D/Studio4/shaders/iray

Do those folders exist and is there something in them?

  • My point of view - 4.11 doesn't support GPU if nvidia not support this hardware any more (this is my case with GT630, i can't insatll the newest Nvidia's driver and i can't use 4.11) => Your only option is to go back to 4.10 to use GPU.

This is a directory for custom MDL shader files (though not the default).

I just had the same issue after the 4.11 update running 3x 1080ti's and Windows 10 Pro. Iray would just close out, and if given the option would only use CPU. I was still on a very old NVidia driver from last year. Something like version 396-397

I just updated to NVidia version 430.86 and now Iray works perfect again. Even seems faster now.

  • OK...so now I've tried to do a render on my laptop that has a GTX 980M with the latest drivers installed (by the nVidia app, NOT windows update).

The dialog box opens, the render window comes up with the checkerboard, dialog box closes and this is left in the log file:

2019-06-24 11:17:16.211 WARNING: ..\..\..\..\..\src\pluginsource\DzIrayRender\dzneuraymgr.cpp(302): Iray ERROR - module:category(IRAY:RENDER):   1.0   IRAY   rend error: Cannot render: found no usable devices.

My question is: where is the folder "..\..\..\..\..\src\pluginsource\DzIrayRender" supposed to be?? I did a search of my entire computer and cannot find it anywhere. Do I need to do some re-installs to make sure everything is where it needs to be or is this just a file in a folder that is created in the moment for the program to use and then it goes away immediately after? Another question - if it is a constant folder/file, is it installed by Studio or nVidia

That is there, I believe, to tell the developers which bit of the source code produced the error (.cpp = C++ code file). It doesn't mean you should have that file on your system.

My card is a 980ti, I'm on nvidia driver version 425.31

In the advanced tab on the render settings, the 980ti is checked for both interactive and photoreal. I can render with CPU, but GPU fails to render (just quits nearly immediately and end up with an empty (checker board) image).

    Any help would be appreciated.

EDITED TO UPDATE: I unistalled 4.11 and reinstalled 4.10 and 4.10 is rendering fine using the 980ti - seems to be a problem with the 4.11 Studio software.

  • Try uninstaling and reinstalling the driver, that version should work but it's possible soemthing went wrong.

I've tried several driver versions, same result basically (though for some earlier ones the render is just an all black image instead of the checkerboard), and came back to this driver version. One note, I am unable to install any of the 430.x series of NVIDIA drivers - my system crashes on install. So it looks like 425.31 is the most recent driver I'll be able to use for now. Obviously there may be some relationship between the driver install crash and the inability to render with 4.11, but I don't know why 4.10 would work. I don't really have time to debug this more unfortunately, I'll have to stick with 4.10 until either a new driver works for me or we get an update to Studio 4.11.

    Thanks for your help.
