A list of 3DL shaders that work in Iray as-is or with little work?
in The Commons
A project that I keep putting off is compiling a list of which of my huge collection of shaders actually work in Iray, as there are a lot of 3DL shaders that DO work with minimal tweaking and many of them cover subjects that haven't been duplicated in Iray yet. GIven that I own over 90 commercial shader set packs from DAZ and at least 40 more sets from other sites, it's a big list to tackle, so I was hoping that maybe there was already a thread or list that someone had started to compile someplace to use as a base. Does anyone know of such a list or happen to know some sets that they've found work easily?

As far as I'm aware the only 3dl shader that Iray can translate is the default one; none of the other shaders translate at all in my experience; although I don't know where you got 90 different shaders from I thought there were only a handful availble.
There are currently 550 different shader sets listed in the DAZ store https://www.daz3d.com/shaders , only half of which are post Iray, and there are at least a hundred more over at Renderosity and available as freebies. Many of those work quite well in Iray as-is or with just a little fiddling and some vendors have taken the initiative to advertise this, as with Denki Gaka's Super Shader series https://www.daz3d.com/super-shaders-super-bundle There are also a lot that clearly don't work, like the old growing grass shader, of course, so it's a pot shoot, but I've had pretty good luck thus far.
They are Shader presets not base Shaders, the grass shader is a shader hence why it won't work.
Anything based of the 3dl shader should translate ok.
Yeah, the ones which basically just apply a tiled texture probbly all work just fine. Although the surfaces are likely to need tweaking.
The actual shaders are completely different. Daz will automatically apply the right uber shader to any that are of the wrong type when you try to render a scene. The results are, to be nice, pretty awful.
Textures are different and should mostly work, with minor tweaks.
The lack of understanding in the community is something that bugs me, and I've had my knuckles rapped for "commenting" on it too.
All shaders built for 3Delight are not, I repeat NOT compatible with Iray, and the same is true going the other way. They use completely different shader languages, RSL for 3Delight and MDL for Iray.
Before anyone gets their undies in a bunch and says that Iray uses their 3DL shader, it doesn't. Rob and the team have tried to make DS4 as idiot proof as they can, to that end there is special code in DS that recognizes a couple of the 3DL shaders, and tries to apply the same settings to the Iray Uber shader at render time, the end result is never going to be great, but it's a lot better than the mess you would have gotten without that code.
There are probably far to many variables in the ShaderMixer for it to work with the special code, so most of those types of shaders aren't going to work very well if at all.
