No Nvidia GPU -- To upgrade to 4.11 or not

davesodaveso Posts: 7,838

I use 4.10.
CPU render iRay without any real problems. yeah, it probalby takes a lot longer, but it works... I'm of course most limited to what I can put in a scene ..

Now with strand based hair, dforce, will it even render in a reasonable time frame?
Are there any other issues with 4.11 that owuld prevent me from rendering in iRay without a GPU?

    @daveso

    Given all the product that you say you buy, i'm surprised you haven't backed off a bit and directed some of those funds to an Nvidia GPU.

    I think you can still use it, but cpu only might be frustrating. Even dforce is glacial on a cpu, as is Iray rendering, so I'm gong to assume that strand and dforce hair might be an issue as well (tho that last bit I'm not entirely certain).

    The coming 2.8 release should make some of the barriers easier now at least. They simplified the interface a great deal. This might be the Blender I go for ;).

    I'm waiting to hear how it works on a Mac. No Nvidia there.

    I have a middle level 2017 iMac and have been using the release without any issues.  It feels like it renders a bit faster and dForce seems faster - not by huge amounts, but not slower either.

    ...I've been working with the 2.8 beta and find it much easier to use and learn than past versions.

    I have an iMac that I use if I just want to do a still of something and let it render while I'm gone during the day, and the past few times I've rendered something in 4.11, it went pretty fast. I had two characters with three spotlights (no environment as I rendered that sepeately) and just to try it the active viewport at 4000 and sometimes it takes maybe an hour to get to like 70 percent with the post denoiser on. So I think it's faster for Mac now with 4.11 than 4.10.

    The only thing that definitely won't work in 4.11 is the new denoiser. Why not download it, or the beta, and try the dForce hair that has been added to dForce Starter Essentials?

    I render almost exclusively in CPU mode (I have a Nvidia card, but it's only a GTX660 with 2 GB, which is quite limiting) and have been using DS 4.11.0.366 Beta for almost a month with no (new) problems. I've not tried the latest version yet, but don't see anything in the Change Log that suggest it won't work too.

    Like Richard says, I'd strongly recommend downloading the Beta and seeing how you get on with it before you commit yourself. (And remember to save the installers for 4.10 and the matching instalers for any version-specific plugins you use, in case you want to go back to 4.10)

    Good luck with that. I've only managed intermittent success over the years. wink
